What are your strategies for blackjack? I have a friend who says one should ALWAYS split if one's hand is two eights, even if the dealer has a seven or above showing.
How much do you usually bet a hand? My first experience in blackjack netted me 850,000 won but I was lucky with splits and doubles. Eventually, I lost about that amount in several trips to Walker Hill, and I've only gone back twice since. My friend says he'd never go without at least 600,000 won. |

Three times to bet your personal maximum:
1) You have twenty and the dealer is showing less than 10, and not an ace
2) You have twenty one and the dealer isn't showing an ace
3) The dealer is showing 5 or 6. And stick on anything above 11.
Otherwise bet the minimum. |
Duuuuh... I don't get it.
Oh I see. Hell yeah, that's a great strategy! Just do _that_!!! |

According to your strategy, how do you know whether you should bet your maximum or minimum when you have to place your bets before the cards are dealt? |

If you have a good system, and you're a smart gambler, you should try to make your fortune gambling. Because the 80% of people that are dumb lose, and the 20% that are smart win.

You think 20% of gamblers stick to a proven black jack strategy? Closer to .20%, if that many. And it's not just a matter of being smart. Outside of that, I can't think of any winning systems to be had. Unless you can figure out a bias in the roulette wheels, or something shady like that. |

Go to the casino with an amount in my pocket.
Get chips.
Keep the winnings in another pocket.
When the original start-up amount is gone, start playing with the winnings pocket.
When that's gone, go home and kick the dog and chalk it up to a fun night out. |

Wikipedia's basic strategy table agress with your friend
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackjack#Basic_strategy
It doesn't sound like fun though. As I understand it, if you play perfect basic strategy you'll reduce the house's advantage to a very small percentage. In other words, you'll be standing there like a robot making every decision based upon some table in your head, and you'll still lose money. |

Yeah, why let maths ruin that good, lucky feeling!
Playing the basic strategy will reduce the odds to 2% in the houses favour, which is better than you'll get anywhere else in the casino. Mastering a card counting system can push it into the low positive percents, but that take a lot of time, discipline, and is definately not fun.
If you're going to play blackjack, just learn the damn basic stragegy chart! It's not hard, you'll lose less money, and you can always vary the amount of the bet if you feel lucky. |

Card counting? Someone has watched too many movies. Do you know how many decks they use? Rainman anyone?
There's basically a 50/50 chance at blackjack. I sorta like the game, but I don't like the players because they all have their rules/superstitions. You sit down next to a guy and get a look like you've just changed his odds of winning. You're going to be getting his cards now and he's on a winning streak. If I want to take a card at 14 I'll take a card at 14. *beep* the rules. But, then I shouldn't have taken that card and that card would have gone to the guy on my right. We all lose and it's my fault.
What gets me is all of the other stupid games where the odds are more heavily stacked against you. Look at the nice big shiny expensive casino. Hmmm. I wonder how they can afford that?
Too many 'systems' out there. The wife has lost the last few times she's gone, which is good. It's slowly proving all of her systems wrong and she's starting to hate going. I point out all the losers in the casino (I know I know). There aren't all those rich big spenders wandering around like in the movies. Those rich big spenders are smart enough to not be throwing their money away. How do you think they got rich? Not from the casino. |

Isn't six decks more or less a standard?? There are some simplified counting systems that work relatively well.

Hi-Low System
One of the most popular card counting systems currently in use is the point count, or Hi-Low system.
This system is based on assigning a point value of +1, 0, or -1 to every card dealt to all players on the table, including the dealer.
Each card is assigned its own specific point value. Aces and 10-point cards are assigned a value of -1. Cards 7, 8, 9 each count as 0. Cards 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 each count as +1. |

Don't play blackjack but recently have been spending a lot of time playing NL hold em. Any of you guys play and what kind of players are you?
Im just in standard tight aggressive mode but trying to learn new moves all the time as i move up the buy-ins (25NL at moment). I started at the
miro levels a couple of months ago.
I'm particularly interested i systems, pre flop play., as in what cards do you play from which pos etc. |

Holy shit! I just play to have a good time. (Well, obviously I hope to win too.)
Years ago I had a regular game with the guys - drinking, smoking Colts cigars, shootin the shit. Ah, the good 'ol days. We'd play dealer's choice and played a WIDE variety of games all nite - draw, stud, 21, Chicago, Detroit, red dog(?), and others. Of course we also played hold 'em, which was one of my favourites.
Now, everyone plays ONLY hold 'em. I recently played at a friend's house with the guys (new group). Hold 'em all night. Only hold 'em. Boooorrrrring. |

The way people play blackjack proves to me that people don't go to casinoes to win money. They go to gamble. And there's a difference. If they went to win money, they'd at least take the time to learn a proven basic strategy and maybe learn hi-low counting. But people go to gamble so they use all sorts of willy-nilly systems. And god bless them, I suppose it's more fun that way, and their losses let the casinos serve free drinks.
This is why I don't go gambling. I've taken the fun out of it for myself. |
