Hello,

I leave tomorrow and recall that I must pay a departure fee. Does anyone remember precisely how much this is? I'm thinking 12,000 won but can't remember exactly, and was unable to find anything via Google.

Thanks.

I'm 99.9% positive you don't have to pay an airport fee in Korea. No, I'm actually 100% sure you don't have to.

Thanks. I checked out my flight receipt and there's a charge that appears to be the charge that Korean airports used to impose. Makes sense to include the fee in the ticket price as there used to be an extra line to stand in, and, some folks (me) didn't know about the fee line and were turned away from entering without the fee receipt.

Yes, it's included in your ticket.

No need for a departure card, either!

The departure tax is 17,000 won. It's usually included in the cost of your plane ticket.

I remember in Vancouver they didn't include it in the air ticket price and I had to borrow a few extra CA$ from a passerby to make up the price because I had spent almost all of my money.

Foreigners are exempt from the departure tax in Korea. It is 10,000 won for Korean nationals. We (foreigners) have been exempted from the tax since the summer of 2002. If you have the tax payment receipt/card you will be instructed to go to the desk and get a refund.

We also do NOT have to fill in the departure card.
This change came in in January of this year.

And as an added bonus, if you have an ARC you don't (as of Aug. 1 this year) need to fill in an arrival card on your return either.

So we really don't have to pay? I checked the Korean-language site of Incheon Int'l Airport and it said only a few foreigners (diplomats, under two years old, ethnic Korean adoptees, foreign soldiers serving in Korea, etc) are exempt from the charge.

I just bough a ticket to Bali and the travel agent said foreigners also have to pay the tax.

You pay the VAT and the other national taxes (included in your ticket) but foreigners are EXEMPT from the departure tax. Korean nationals pay the extra 10,000 won departure fee.

If you only have a single-entry visa and plan to return they may insist that you get a re-entry visa for 30,000 won at the last minute (I nearly missed my flight because of it...)

Thailand is one place they hit you with a big departure fee...

What's your source on this? I was looking at the Incheon Airport website and it states that international departure passengers pay 10,000 won as a departure tax and 17,000 won as a Passenger Service Charge, included in the cost of the ticket. Exemptions are for diplomats, international transit passengers, and individuals deported from the country.

It's 500 baht (about US$13.50).

Personal experience. I have had the departure fee card/paper/receipt thing and when I got to the security gate I was told to return to the money exchange counter and get a refund - foreigners are exempt.

It has been like that since the summer of 2002. I have done the refund thing several times (usually when I fly with a group of Koreans cause the escort gets the departure fee thing for everyone and I always have to get a refund - 10,000 won)

Well, it seemed big at the time - due to circumstances. I spent too much on gifts and stuff, then got food poisoning on New Year's eve (in Chiang Mai...) ended up forgetting to keep 500 baht for the departure fee, and had to scramble to get a cash advance on my credit card (or something) It was just a big nuisance...

So foreigners DO pay 17,000 won as a PSC but Koreans pay that and another 10,000 won as well. But the airport.co.kr site doesn't say that foreigners don't have to pay the 10,000 won tax.
