I know there's another thread about distance MAs and I've looked through it, but I haven't seen anything about Canadian universities' offerings.

I'm looking for a 100% distance (not online, if possible) program. I'm applying to a couple of British programs but I'd like to keep the cost down, if possible, and the international student fees are a killer!

Anyone currently enrolled in, or recently completed, a distance MA Applied Linguistics from a Canadian university?

Hello,
I don't know why it is, but Canada doesn't have much in the way of distance masters programs for TESL/applied linguistics. Unless it has changed from the past, the only distance program was at the University of Calgary and it was a generic M.Ed. program.
There are good programs in Canada, for example Concordia's special program, and I don't know why there aren't distance programs on offer. It would be nice for Canadians to have distance M.A.'s/M.Ed's from their own country.
Good luck with your search.

Hi,

I did my degree a while ago but at the time looked into doing my M.A. at distance with a university in Canada. I found nothing.

I don't know why Canadian universities haven't done what Australia and the U.K. have been doing for the last 10 yearrs or so by starting these distance TEFL / Applied Linguistics M.A. degrees.

Maybe it's because most M.A. degrees in Canada require a dissertation requirement, whereas in the U.K. and Australia, they are mainly coursework degrees.

In Australia, you even have to apply to do a thesis for your M.A. TESOL / Applied Linguistics - it's not guaranteed that you'll even be admitted to the thesis component! I thought that was weird. But that's the way things are there.

Anyways, looks like Australia and the U.K. (maybe Univ. of Auckland in New Zealand) would be better places to look.

Hey, you might want to check out Univ. of Auckland, the prices are competitive compared to U.K. and Australia and, of course, Rod Ellis is teaching there at the moment!

Victoria University of Wellington offers MA TESOL and Applied Linguistics by distance. Cost is about 11 million won for non-NZ/Australians. Paul Nation is programme director and takes a couple of the courses.

I'm shaking my fist at you laogaiguk.

Anyway, Paul Nation does whatever he likes. There's a rumour going around that Thailand was so grateful for the time he spent teaching there that they named a newspaper after him.
