Hello! New to this forum but have spent many hours researching and reading on this forum! I wanted to know if anyone has any tips or suggestions they can give for any "couples newbie" that are planning to teach in January. I have begun the apply to schools and recruitment agencies. (We'll see how this goes!)
PS: Will it be hard for a couple to have the "good" life if they teach together? I've heard people say its hard to get vacation times together. O...and I know SEOUL is the place to be!! So we are planning to go there, but would prefer to not teach near the slums...(I have a RAT phobia  ) Any suggestions?
I know this is a mouth full but I really do appreciate it!  |

my boyfriend and i arrived in korea on 1 july. we've got couple jobs, but we're at two different schools in a small town.
my school is super a-retentive and controlling, but my bf's is super lax and friendly. i got told when my vacation would be, and the other school accomodated it. that was nice.
i think the schools are really happy with us, though -- they don't need to worry about inappropriate stuff going on with the students. |

So in other words schools who hire teachers who are not part of a couple have to worry about inappropriate stuff going on with the students?
That's a pretty offensive assumption not to mention totally wrong. While the majority of pedophiles MAY be single there are those who are in relationships or even married even if just to provide a cover of sorts. |

| So did u think it turned out for the best that you guys got placed in different schools? B/c maybe if it was the same school it would be difficult for you gets to get the same days off right? They were okay with you guys living together...unmarried? I know koreans are traditional, like most asians are. |

Hardship is rife here. You'll be walking at least 10km to the water well everyday and contend with children with no shoes on their feet...
Just kidding, but you may want to do some more research about South Korea. |

HAHAHA....I didn't be "slums" like that. I've lived in Hong Kong before and I knoe seoul is very similar to the big cities in Hong Kong. I heard many people say that seoul is a great place to live. But people have said that there are parts of seoul that are really dirty, scary, dark, etc... I'm not high maintence but when I said "slums" that was what I meant.
Btw..I said I had a Rat Phobia right?
One more question: is it hard for couples to teach in different schools and live together?? Thanks!! |

well, our last school (in china, mind you) had 2 out of 6 teachers sleeping with students.
oddly enough, there's a hagwon in our town that just hired two single guys and the managers are trying to find them women. lots and lots of women.
i don't mean to offend you personally, urban, i'm just making an observation based on my personal experience. |

well there's another couple that were told "okay, you sleep in the living room and you sleep in the bedroom" because they weren't married yet. we're letting everyone know that we're engaged since i'm not sure koreans buy into "long-term partner" or "common-law wed".
i wish we were at the same school, because during my office hours i'm bored to tears. i'm not sure if i mentioned that we're at public schools. i'm under the impression that it's easier for public school teachers to get time off at the same time. |

| ICIC...thanks for the suggestions! My boyfriend and I have been together for a long time now so we're practically married! We do also live together here in the states and plan on getting married. "We're engaged"-Does that really make a difference? |

I'm signing my contract tommorrow and leaving in November. One school I applied with was confused and thought it was my boyfriend I would be coming with, they didn't offer me a position. Then when the recruiter explained that it was my husband, they sent the job offer that day. So it seems like it matters to some people. |

I'm not saying it's normal or anything, it's not like I have a ton of experience with this... but in this particular instance it was apparently a big deal to them. |

| Coming as a couple you should also make sure you have an apartment payment of at least 300,000 in at least one of the contracts...that way you can use one provided apartment and get at least another 300,000 won a month in income from the other contract! |
