Those of us who have been here for a few summers, would you call this a "heat wave"? The news was going on about how electrical usage is at an all time high and have some how tied this to the idea the heat is abnormally high for, you know, August. Clearly, as Koreans get richer and time goes by, more people buy air conditioners. So naturally energy demand will go up even if one has a typically hot summer.

But I dunno. I don't find this "too hot for sex" weather. Real heat is when the crime rate goes down. It's simply too hot for anyone to move around much, let alone go out and rob.

I have been shut into my air-conditioned apartment for the last two weeks due to the heat, but I am heading out tonight....

Air conditioning is pretty bad for the environment.

We could save energy and help maintain biodiversity by raising hundreds of rare butterflies in our apartments. Their fluttering wings could provide a gentle cooling breeze, and over time they could be trained for simple tasks such as opening envelopes and alphabeticising our CD collections.

Which would lead to butterfly death!

Think before you post! Razz

I went out to the zoo on Thursday. It was hot, but then around 5:30 the heat broke and it became quite pleasant. I think this is the beginning of the end of the heat.

I was told that last year was much hotter.

At work they had the AC on. The windows and doors were closed near the AC at one end of the cubicles, but they door and windows were open at the other end.

I think for an official heat wave the temperature should at least hit 90 degrees F for a few days (really 95, but I'm giving it some slack), which I don't think it has yet, at least where I am. High 80's yes, but not 90.

I'm totally into this idea. I'd really like it if I could train my butterflies to wash my dishes. Could you maybe post a "how to" on raising and training butterflies? TY!

I have noticed this. There's a pizza place by me that has the a/c running full blast but the doors, front and back of the shop, are wide open. I think a lot of Koreans just view them as fans that blow cold air. Need to be cool? Stand in front of it.

My sister's husband does the same thing with a bar he owns. He had an explanation, but I can't remember it. Partly because it was in Korean, party because I don't really care.
