Politicians are yet again basing policy not on science but on the plot of movies. (Guns in the hands of air marshals and pilots were long banned because of the movie Goldfinger where a bullet hole sucked Goldfinger out a window. This myth was firmly put to rest on Myth Busters.) It seems to me if you really wanted to shut down air travel in the free world, just drive some Ryder trucks or minivans up to the departures ramps at major airports and set off some conventional fertilizer explosives a la Oklahoma. How do you defend against that? No more car trips to the airport? Everyone has to board special buses? |

A pilot that reads my blog also suggested this one. If you want to down an airliner, just go to a major hub. The glidepaths go right over major highways. And they're coming in at regular intervals. Just drive a Ryder truck into the breakdown lane and detonate when the plane glides over.
Another one is just do a DC sniper thing. You'd think a group of terrorists in America could manage to recreate the DC sniper thing in a few major American cities. Who went outside in the DC area for two weeks?
And there are all kinds of wonderful ways to poison the water and food supply.
If in five years, no terrorist has done any of these amazingly simple things to spread terror, is the threat real? |
