|
|
| I always wanted to get a very powerful short-wave radio. I don't mean the run-of-the mill one that picks up some, but has a limited reach. What can I find over here in South Korea and what price range. Any other short-wave radio fans out there? I wonder why they never build any with tape decks. It would be nice to tape stuff sometimes. |

Transmiter or reciever?
If you just want to recieve off the shortwave band go get yourself an off the shelf Bose shortwave reciever.
If you want to transmit you better get your korean permit. It apparently isn't any different than getting an american permit to transmit on the shortwave band.
Do you know morse? If you can knock out morse code at a high rate you can get a better permit. |

I have a Grundig yachtboy radio. The AM reception is very weak so it makes me wonder how the SW is. I'm not certain why you want one. I thought I could I could hear the BBC. You can but you have to change frequencies often. If you want news and music, I recommend Cirrus/Sat radio.
SW is fun for exploring for odd broadcasts and learning about out radio electronics otherwise you'd get irritated if you just wanted news and music. |

I have heard of Grundig, but I don't know how strong it is. I want something that I will definitely be satisfied with. I want something that can pick up Paris, Montreal, the U.S., Canada etc... Basically, I want something to be powerful to pick up those places and to be user-friendly at the same time. I heard there are some Chinese brands on the higher end that are better than Grundig, but I am not an expert on shortwaves. I heard Sony used to make good ones, but they stopped making them. |

If you are talking about power, you are talking about transmitting.
It sounds like you want reception and for that you want sensitivity and the best EXTERNAL antenna you can find. We are in a mountainous country so your bounce and skip are intermittent at best. Even a mediocre receiver can do well with a nice EXTERNAL antenna. Altitude also counts here. The higher you are the better your reception.
Look for one with an analog tuner. The coil tuners are more sensitive than the digital tuners (you can fine tune between frequencies if it is off a bit). |

Adventurer, I'm not clear that you understand SW yet although that might be the case. If so I apologize.
You can't get AM or FM broadcasts on SW. If you want to get radio stations from back home, this won't work. You may get signals once in awhile and it won't be user friendly.
Below are the BBC's frequencies in Korea. It changes 17 times a day. you have to change stations 17 times day. Its not worth it.
