|

I am doing an extra conversation class at my school and nine kids have signed up. In my opinion nine is far too many for a conversation class.
I would prefer 6, because then we can all sit round the one table and chat and the students will feel less initimidated and therefore more likely to talk in English.
What's your ideal number for a conversation class?

It really depends on the mix of personalities. Sometimes 1 or 2 is fantastic, other times 6 is like pulling teeth.
In general I agree with you though. |

6 imho has too high of a probability to end in Chaos |

Such low numbers! I prefer conversation classes with around eight to twelve students, but more is ok if the classroom is set up for it. If there are too few students then the class will seem too quiet and people will get self-conscious and clam up - I find around eight is minimum needed to get critical mass so people feel relaxed enough. |

Unfortunately, my class is set up in such a way that you can't move the tables. The most number of people you can fit comfortably around each table is 6, including the teacher.

Right. What are the objectives of the class? Is it intended to be a teacher led discussion? |

As always, I haven't been given any idea of the aim of the class. My aim is to improve the students fluency. They come to this class because they don't get the opportunity to speak a lot in their regular class of 40 plus students.
So, I would say a discussion class, but I don't want it to be entirely teacher led. I would start them off and add in bits from time to time. I want them to really talk amongst themselves.
They are the best speakers from my 1st and 2nd Grade high school classes. About intermediate level.

Surprise, surprise. The numbers have now magically grown from what was 6 now there are 11.
