Do all employers of foreign teachers have to pay Korean income tax? Is it a legal requirement? A school offering me a job has just claimed that the school does not pay Korean taxes for me. Is this suspicious and what can I do to get them to pay taxes for me if it is not their usual policy ? I think it sounds very suspicious myself. I also think they won't be paying into the pension fund or for national health insurance neither are in the contract. Are these legitimate concerns of mine or am I being paranoid?

BTW Ireland (my home country) has a tax convention with Korea to avoid double taxation. I think this means my income from Korea has to be taxed in Korea and not in Ireland.

He is cheating and you will be liable for tax evasion/fraud.

You can rest assured that he is NOT paying into pension and medical for his staff either if he is not registered and paying income/with-holding taxes.

Look elsewhere.

Thanks, I was pretty sure it was illegal. I sent an email to them quoting the government taxation website which exactly contradicted what they told me.
