...got really pissed at the kids for jumping up and down and screaming 'yay' during an ESL game on Friday. They were supposed to cheer at the end of each round and generally be excited.
I think he was upset that they were losing their line composure in the excitement of the game, but they were fine for my purposes and I told him. He went on though, I guess there's something he felt was important that I didn't have to pay attention to. I still don't know what the problem was but I think I'm going to say something to the head teacher, because our 40 minute class had no less than 25 minutes eaten up by his rant. The lines started to get a little sloppy due to the little 6-year olds raising their fists and cheering and jumping up and down when they finished at the end of each round. I couldn't help but notice him pointing at my candy and barking louder. I think he was saying, 'do you think you can act this way for some stupid candy?' or something to that effect. I was blown away by how upset this guy was, and I vainly tried to figure out how in some parallel Korean universe this could have been necessary.
I thought I blew the whole thing off, but now it's pissing me off this happened! I think the answer is maybe, 'head teacher, I'm not sure how to proceed with the grade one class. This is what happened with the homeroom teacher...' and take it from there.
Wise? Foolish? Just wondering if any other public school teachers would let this drop. I'm second-guessing myself because the Korean teacher's supposed to be there for support, and we were really on a roll before he freaked. I wonder if I should ask to remove the homeroom teachers from their classes for conversation?

It would seem that you have a case. His actions were the type that would have a foreigner in big trouble if he or she pulled the same stunt. |

In my opinion, I would try to work this situation out with him. Briefly touch base on the issue. Discuss oneanother's role during classroom activities, and come together as a team. That's the approach I would use instead of going over his head to the head teacher. If that doesn't work, then get the head teacher involved. |

THis is by far the best advice you will get. Work it out with him first, or atleast try to. |

Did you say they were 6 year olds? If so, then that guy needs to learn more about little kids, a lot more! Alabamaman has the best advice. |

Damned straight. Their adorable little pouty eyes are haunting me from last week, looking up silently asking, 'can't you save us from this?' Man I wanted to club that guy.
This is all good advice, thanks and I appreciate it but partly I just wanted to biatch about his forcing the kids to remove all spirited participation from the exercise in the aim of taking the class seriously. In one sense I appreciated what his concern was but for God's sakes, it didn't need more than 5 minutes of speaking.
I think for next conversation I will teach the grade ones the lyrics to Pink Floyd's 'The Wall.' Then make them sing it back to the homeroom teacher in Korean.
Hey! Teacher! Leave us kids alone! |

It seems you may want to talk to him (with someone who can translate if necessary) and find out clearly what the problem was. After that make a decision on what to do next. |

Actually a prize system for achievers is quite common among most of the public school ESL teachers I talk to. If you think candy is wrong, then I guess you'd think it was really wrong to have ESL money, because there are schools that do that too. Every so often ESL money is given out and at the end of the month they can go and exchange the ESL money for small prizes or candies.
We talked about implementing this at our school but decided against it, but the idea itself is a good one, I think. It sure beats negative motivations like flicking kids' foreheads and whacking them when they're bad, etc. |
