|
|
Hey folks,
I'm nearing the end of my contract and I'm pretty sure I'm going to stay on with the Hogwon I'm at now. I'm curious about the airfare deal. My boss says that the ticket is open ended and that I can just postpone it until next year or the year after or whatever, until I go home. I was excited about getting the money for the ticket along with my severence and december pay, it would be a pretty nice little pay check, anyway, since it's an open ticket it looks like I won't be getting that extra bit of cash. My question is do most people who stay on another year get the ticket refunded and keep the cash or is this idea of postponing the ticket a common occurence?
Thanks AGAIN!

I would say that you should negotiate with your boss about the airfare since you decided to stay on with your hagwon. Considering if you moved on to another job, your boss would have spent recruiter fee and another round trip ticket, etc.
If you haven't signed on to your second year contract, you should definately negotiate with your boss. |

No, it's not common at all.
Check your contract. If you find that you are entitled to return airfare for one year's service, then you are entitled to it at the end of one year's service...not two.
Don't you want to go anywhere between contracts anyway? |

Oh yea, shit I I'd love to go to Thailand or somewhere and dick around for a month or so then come back and start again, but I don't know...this guy's been so good to me, I would feel bad leaving him before the school actually took off. It would be hard on him I think if I left, haha I don't want to sound like I'm a great teacher or anything, but I know what he wants and all that...ahh I dunno.
Are there ways to get a temporary teacher for a month or so while I'm gone? haha then come back? That might be an avenue? |

If you have a one year open return ticket, depending on the carrier, it will PROBABLY EXPIRE on it's one year anniversary date. Use it or lose it.
Check with the airline to see if it can be refunded or extended. Many times they cannot be.
Finish your contract, get your pay, severance etc. Use the ticket. Fly home for a short vacation and have your school buy you a new ticket if they want you back. |

You might be able to advertise for an F-class visa holder to fill in for a month. Not just on here, but on...
http://english.daegu.go.kr
www.koreabridge.com
www.galbijim.com
And others...they have forums, too.
Otherwise, you ARE entitled to the airfare after one year. He should give you the cash for it... considering the fact you are willing to forfeit your vacation, it's only fair. |

Thanks for the sites, I will mention to him about the month long replacement. It sounds like a good plan!
Thanks for the help and insight |

As ttompatz said, in all likelihood it will expire after a year. it isn't open-eneded forever, just a year time period...
He is just being a little stingy...
If worse comes to worse just go home on his dime and come back if he won't front up money for a ticket or if you can't come to a compromise... |
