Hi, I've had two serious job offers but I don't know which to accept. The first is from a school in Seoul and the main difficulty is that they want me to come three weeks before I can get the E-2. The other school is in Daegu and they originally wanted me for October but are prepared to wait until I've got the E-2 in my home country (late Nov). Both jobs are offering 2.0 million per month and all the usual perks. So I suppose my question relates to location and start date. Is Seoul better than Daegu for someone who doesn't care much about night life or socialising? And is it illegal to teach part-time while waiting for paper-work?/documents (my degree) as they have requested in the first job? They say its not but I'm pretty sure they're lying or are ignorant. Any feedback or advice is much appreciated. Thanks |

Well I suppose it's alright if you go there 3 weeks before you get your E2...as long as they don't expect you to work or recieve training or anything like that since it would be illegal. However, I doubt this is the case and would advise you to take the latter. If you do not choose to wait this long, then My suggestion would be to keep your search going on and don't settle for either of the two. |

I have to wait until November because my degree is conferred then. I think the first job expects me to work during those weeks. |

unless the E-2 is in your passport ..and you are working ON the E-2 visa...anything prior to that happening is ILLEGAL.
the school knows this..they just pay a fine...wham bam..u...fine...bumped out of the country.. |

All other things being equal, you should accept the position which will wait until you get the visa. DO NOT commence work without the E2. |

I was under the impression that once the visa application was submitted to immigration you could begin work. That's what my school did. I don't know about the exact law here but I know that's the law in Canada. Once you submit your work visa application, you can work legally until it's rejected. |

How many posts is it going to take before people believe that it is ILLEGAL to work without an E-2 visa in Korea? |

Your impression in wrong. Until the stamp/sticker is in your passport (issued by an embassy/consulate outside of KOrea) you do NOT have the legal right to work in Korea. A pending application or a blue paper isn't enough.
Your boss had you working illegally. |
