I'm reading some essays from my students about an English book about a runaway girl. The girl is over worked and under appreciated by parents who seem to favor the boys in the family. The girl runs away and hides in a museum. Clearly, this is a character 99% of Korean kids can identify with.
About half the essays come back with comments like "I used to think running away from home was a bad idea until I read this book. I wanted to do it but I was afraid. Now I can see running away can be a good thing."
Oh dear.
Not my class. I won't get blamed when half our essay students vanish and spend a few months living out of a bus station turning tricks for food and penicillin. |
