Shabu-Shabu is a delicious Japanese meal which is probably beyond your means in Korea. If you were to take a woman out for shabu-shabu, it would cost you about three hundred bucks for two.
So I would like to teach you how to cook this meal on the cheap to impress your lady friends.
First, you have to go to the butcher. You got to tell the lady to give you some beef cut razor thin. For two people, I'd say five pound ought to do you. Four for you and one for your lady friend. It's that delicious. You won't want to share.
You also need to buy some Chinese mushrooms and bean sprouts.
What you do is this, my friends:
1. Boil a pot of water over one of them little portable gas stoves the Koreans love.
2. Then you have to season that water. My Old Lady loves to Cajun-fy her shabu-shabu. She puts lots of jalipenos into that boiling water. She also put those hot Korean green peppers into the mix. Me and my Old Lady love hot food. It's so hot that when you lick your lips, you will actually burn your tongue. But to each their own.
3. Next you have to decide what kind of sauce you want to dip that beef into. For instance, do you want that red pepper stuff? Not me. I go with soy sauce and wasabi.
4. Dump your beef--not all at once--and your bean sprouts and your Chinese mushrooms into the boiling water. Let them cook. Take them out and dip them into the wasabi. Then you put that stuff into your mouth. The pain combined with the pleasure is terrific.
You're going to love it!
What to drink with shabu-shabu? Beer! Dark beer. I'd go with Guiness. Forget this soju crap. This is a real meal that deserves a special beer.
Try this recipe--especially you guys. Make sure you have the Guiness.
Your girl will love it. And for God's sake, don't make her pay Dutch.
Anyway, good luck. You're going to love this stuff. |

| 300 dollars? It usually costs 12-20 dollars for 2 people. I have been to many shabu shab restaurants, always about this price. |

Yeah lots of shabu shabu places in Korea. There's one behind my apartment. It's not that expensive. Maybe if you're boiling Kobe beef or eating it at W or the Westin Chosun. Where have you paid $300 for shabu shabu in Korea?
There's one nice chain, I forget the name, but one is in Hyehwa next to the McDonalds. They serve Japanese kimchi... the non fermented kind. If you've never had "kimuchi", give it a try. It's really good.
It's also referred to as "hot pot" by the Chinese. There are some really amazing hot pot restaurants in Northern Toronto.
Hot pot/shabu shabu (and fondue) is indeed a fun and easy dinner to cook at home with your snuggle wuggle or a group of friends.

Well, I paid three hundred.
Do you think it's because I ate too much of the beef?
Or do you think I got ripped-off? |

Went to an all you can eat buffet shabu-shabu in Ill-san. 9,000 won. No lie! Lots of thin sliced meat, seafood, and great veggies.
Another good one is the 41 Bldg. in Mok-dong for 15,000 won. It might cost that much in Japan, but not in Korea. |

My lady and I love Shabbu-Shabbu (do you know that's Mongolian for Swish-Swish!).
We've been to about 10 different places. Usually pay 20-30,000. Paid about 80,000 for two one time. Didn't taste much better. |

I paid three hundred in Taejon.
But I eat a lot. I mean, I eat a whole heck of a lot. And I also drink a lot.
Not sure if I paid the fair price, or if I was ripped.
But I got to give them the benefit of the doubt because I do love to eat. |

Is the point of this thread really to help us single expats cook our way into the hearts of Korean chicks, give up the soju in favour of Guiness with our meals, and not be like those cheap-arse Canadians & Scots who always "go dutch"? Or is it to let us know that you once dropped $300 on a fancy meal? |

I doubt it. Shabu shabu is about 20$ or so for two people. Heck, it's about 40$ for two in Japan.

He's been a member since June of this year. My guess is that he's a newbie who's been ripped off or, more likely, one who still has trouble converting won to dollars. |

No, I am 99% sure that he is a poster who used to be named BigBill and was banned (not too hard to believe...) |

I'm not sure, my friend. I'm a tad confused.
Try the seafood gumbo thread. If that can't win a woman's heart, nothing will. |
