So today I'm leaving TGI Fridays with a friend and we notice a large crowd of folks circling around the entrance and staring. We find the focal point and notice a group of guys tying and taping these two other guys to a pillar. My friend tells me "Oh, I've seen this before, they beat them up, it's a birthday thing. Then the guy gets free and beats all the people who beat him."
I'm thinking "surely not even Koreans would-" and then they do! 9 or 10 guys start wailing on these two guys tied helplessly to a pillar, in public on a crowded downtown street. And I mean really putting it to them. The guys were sagging against the restraints by the time the "friends" let up. I didn't see any blood, but there were plenty of vicious kicks, punches and elbows to the back and head. I do my best to be understanding of this new culture I find myself in, but seriously. What the holy hell is this? Does too much Kimchi cause brain damage?

I see subject heading and I think what is SuperFly on about now.
Kimchi cures brain damage; I'm sure they all went out for some afterwards. |

See something like this: Record it with your cellphone, make an avi file of it and post it on the Korean Tourism website.
Soon there will be a national campaign outlawing such a silly pastime.
'Ain't got a handphone? Come to my sister in law's shop for a good deal. PM me for details. |

This custom doesn't sound as much fun (or as widely spread) as the bride's male relatives and friends beating the groom with dried fish. |

Yep, that happened at my wedding. Ride a donkey, smash some gourds, jump over burning straw, have a net thrown on me from a tree, get beaten with a dried fish, just another wedding day in Daegu ROK city. |

All my kingdom for a camera. No one would believe this back home without proof. Got a handphone but it doesn't take video, just pictures. And my camera has sand in it from the World Cup game against Togo and the beach party here in Pohang, it's not really working well. |

If it was his birthday,he'd have to pay for his mates booze too...
Reminds me of a New Zealand stag night "tradition" where the guy gets tied to a powerpole naked and wrapped with toilet roll.About as much fun as a yard glass in the arse... |

I've seen this in the States. The international dorm at my college had a small group of Korean men. I was friends with one of them, and arranged a surprise birthday party for him. I invited all his Korean friends.
They surprised him, and me too, by beating the living crap out of him. He was on the ground and they were kicking him! Again, no blood, just bumps and bruises (they tended to aim away from the face), and the best part was when they were done, he was struggling to stand, and he looked up at me, beaten to a pulp, and said "Thank you."
After asking some questions, I learned that this is a tradition for Korean boys that sometimes goes into adulthood (i.e. some Korean boys still consider themselves boys at age 22/25/29). |
