Anyone have any strong views/opinions on the above?

Am currently trying to decide at the moment between the two. Lower money at the public school, less hours, more overtime poss but bigger classes, 30-35! Id be the only foreign teacher and its my first stint in Korea.

I've now seen so many contracts, starting to get tired and this is the first public school position to be offered to me.

Ultimately I need to earn good money.

Any help would be great.

Thanks

On here since July??? Do a quick search... there are many, many, many threads on this EXACT question.

To give you a quick summary.

At the end of your first year, your savings will be the same.
Which is better? It very much depends on YOU.

Are you capable of hitting the ground running. Can you function in isolation? Are you comfortable as an expat in a foreign country, with strange language and customs?

If the answer is YES to the above, then you will be fine in a public school.
========================
If you are away from your home country for the first time, cautious by nature, not comfortable in new or strange surroundings and perhaps need the support of people who have at least some understanding of western ways, western thinking, speak some English and can assist you with the daily things like opening a bank account, finding a doctor, getting groceries or need the companionship of other expats like yourself... then consider a hakwon.
========================

Most public schools are NOT used to dealing with a foreigner. They do NOT understand the immigration rules we have to follow. They do NOT understand the daily difficulties that we encounter because of language or corporate/government policies that are NOT foreigner friendly.

Having said that, on the plus side, there is job security. You don't have to worry about getting paid. You get medical insurance. You will get your severance if you complete a full year or more of service.

Job security cannot be said about working in a hakwon. Pension, medical, overtime, holidays, sick days are all things that are usual complaints at just about EVERY hakwon.

and as ever - was told off or so it seems. Yes I've lived abroad before and have been in asia for 7 months on my own, so maybe I'll just go for it!!

Anyway thanks for your reply, it was the only one. Everyone on this site seems really narky. Maybe the search engine should be refined, as everyone is so bored of answering the same questions and then they could all concentrate on higher things?!!

Umm, no. ttompatz is one the more helpful posters and offered some good advice.

But yes, most posters are tired of seeing the same questions over and over. Follow the board for a couple weeks. Do some searches (I know it sucks, but make sure you use the 'and' e.g. "public and schools and jobs"). Check the FAQ. Here's a good start.

Good luck.

I can remember quite well when I first joined this site and would see people get tired of people asking the same questions over and over. I've been at that point for several months, as I've seen 190394032 posts about CDI, 2304234 posts about public and private schools, what things to bring to korea, what area to live in, same stuff over and over.....use the search button.

I don't care what point you are at.

Since you have seen so many posts you should know the "search" ain't too reliable!

Why would you recommend it?

Be sure you are using the right terms. There are private academies (hogwans), public schools, and private elementary, middle, and high schools. Public and private schools (hakyo) are very similar, and very different from private academies.

How did I know one of you tools would complain about the search function. Do i really need to cover every possible angle when making a post? Sorry I'm not that anal.....You don't even need the search....Look back a few pages in the job discussion forum and you'll find your answers, lazy
