I am just curious if anyone else is paying Unemployment insurance every month. Is this even possible as a foreigner? If I am unemployed I dont have a job or a visa thus I cant legally be in the country, therefore it doesnt really make sense. Just curious if I am being screwed or not.. Thanks for the help.

Depends..I work for a public school and am on a F-2 visa and I have to pay it. It's not alot though only about 10,000 won a month. If you contrast that with not having to pay Korean taxes the first year because you get an exception from them (note this doesn't apply if your Canadian) then it's no big deal.

My school was on the verge of getting me to pay for unemployment insurance last year, but because I am an E-2 visa holder I don't have to have it.
My school told me it is only for those who have F type visas.

Just out of curiosity, for F-visas, what does Korean unemployment insurance cover should you ever become unemployed?

i.e. amount? duration? etc.?

If you have an F-visa then you are covered and can make a claim (because your residence is NOT tied to your job. You can remain in Korea as a resident.

With an E-class visa your residence and sojourn are dependant on your job. No job = no visa = no right of residence and you must leave.

Returning on a tourist stamp or visa does NOT allow the right of residence.

Hmmm.. I should have looked into getting unemployment benefits while I was making the switch from a hogwan to a public school. Anyone know what the pay is like?

I've checked it out in the labor ministry website and you get following:

Requirement is that you must have been working continously for 6 months without a break to qualify for the benefit.

AMOUNT:
You get half (1/2) of your average normal monthly salary each month (average from last three months).

DURATION:
If you worked over 6 months but less than 1 year, you get only 3 months of unemployment benefit.

If you worked over 1 year but less than 3 years, you get 4 or 5 months (can't recall) of unemployment benefit.

If you worked over 3 years, you get maximum of 6 months of UM benefit.

If you are disabled, you get it for very very long time.

If I ever get hooked-up with Korean woman and get married, I plan on taking long vacations between jobs. Laughing

If you have an E2 visa you DO NOT HAVE TO PAY IT!

A quick call to the labour board will confirm this. It is an option for E2 visa holders.
