I could really use some advice on what to do in the particular class that I'm teaching. I just started the semester and the director has me tutoring this girl who is 14 years old and her English is ok. The school wants me to work on her speaking but its like pulling teeth. When I ask her questions she answers them but I can barley understand what she is saying because she is so quiet. She is smart and when I have her in other classes she can be extremely loud with the other girls. I really need help on what I can do to break the ice and what activities I can do to work on her speaking. I would appreciate any links that might be helpful. |

Bring in a lot materials you can discuss together, such as English Magna comic books and teen magazines. Ask her about Korean pop bands and get her to describe the various band members. Get her to tell you about her middle school and her teachers. You might also want to try getting her to keep an English journal. |
