A friend of mine is considering an offer from them, and is wondering if it's an OK school to work for.
Respond here or by PM.
Thanks. |

Yeah, but each franchise has its own ups and downs so I'm checking for specifics. |

If it's a branch school run by head office it will probably be fine. It's the franchises outside of Seoul that have the lion's share of problems. |

Checking here means diddly squat - especially with a franchise kindy hakwon that has the reputation of ECC. It is the lazy mans way out and is usually NOT effective. Really, if your friend was making a reccomendation, would you accept just this from him??
and BTW... if FT's are in for the kindy lunch, you can rest assured that it is NOT contact time but one of those "extra duties" listed in the duties section of the contract.
Like I said... follow the drill.... or make sure your friend follows the drill for his own protection.
============================================
Get e-mail addresses of more than one current teacher. Talk / e-mail them when the boss is NOT there and they are free to be honest with you.
============================================
-Ask specific questions about shifts, start times, finish times, breaks, and pay issues. (a schedule of class, no class, class, no class, class just plain sucks). Lots of dead time that you can't do anything with.
-How do they calculate your "teaching hours"? How many CLASSES per month.
-OVERTIME, pension, and medical insurance are often issues of contention. Many hakwons fail to pay any of these. ASK SPECIFICALLY about EACH one.
- Ask about the housing - including quality of the apartment, management fees and utility costs. That "free" apartment may cost you more than 150k won per month.
Feel free to ignore this advice... but you do so at your own peril.
Asking here is NOT the same as doing your homework and proper research.
There are TOO MANY hakwons in Korea and they often change names or owners when things get nasty. A year is a long time to spend in a crap hakwon 1/2 a world away from anything that you know and recognise.
CHECK FIRST HAND...... CHECK FIRST HAND.... CHECK FIRST HAND......
Good luck in your search.
If they are unable or unwilling to give e-mail addresses of more than 1 current teacher - RUN, don't walk to the next offer.
ANY and EVERY reputable school will be willing to give you references.

Your advice is sound, there's really nothing to disagree with, thank you.
I'm still hoping I hear from someone who actually worked there. It can't hurt, can it? |

Sorry if my unwillingness to do charity work offends you. Lunch time is usually a nice time to get some peace and relax- especially if it's UNPAID. You sound like a chump who is getting bent over backwards by his wongjong. |
