In the spirit of recent threads here, I thought it would be fitting to share the results of the first episode of the latest Survivor season.
This year, the survivors were divided into 4 groups.
Asian(2 Korean, 1 Philippino, 1Vietnamese immigrant, 1mixed asian), Caucasian, African, and Latin. (all born in America)
If you want spoilers, scroll down.
In the mad scramble off the boat, they were given 2 minutes to salvage items of value. There were 2 chickens, some pots, knives, etc.
The caucasian team found one chicken and took it down to their raft.
The asian team found the other chicken.
As one asian was handing the chicken from the boat to his team mate on their raft, it landed in the water.
A caucasian guy nabbed it.
When the caucasians settled in camp, they trapped the 2 chickens under a crate. A short while later, one of the girls from the team forgot about it and lifted up the crate. The birds escaped into the jungle.
The immunity challenge was 60% physical(rowing, climbing, running) and 40% mental (2 puzzles).
The asian team won by a good margin. Latin was second, caucasian third.
Beforethe challenge, the host questioned about the fate of the chicken. The korean pointed the finger, but the caucasian said something along the lines of 'oh? YOU had it?'.
The african team, having lost the challenge was awarded the choice of sending anyone from any team to exile island. They chose the chicken nabber.
Anyway, there was lots of hype, setting this thing up as some kind of 'social experiment'. |

I just saw an advert for it on AFN. I didn't pay attention to the starting date but it looks like it'll be shown again. |

Just finished watching it here in Korea. 8pm fridays. Has the makings to be another good season, though with 4 tribes they won't focus on any one too often. |

Best quote from the first episode, from a female member on the African American team " This machete wont even cut cotton." |

Still staying true to typical Survivor behaviour.....its not your ability that keeps you around its how quick you can convince others to vote the other guy off. |

I watched it at noon today - Korea time - at www.viidoo.com. Check out CBS next Friday and you won't even have to wait for the torrent to be posted.
My personal opinion is that the racial groupings aren't really an issue...only an interesting topic for conversation. Some players are going to fit the stereotypes and others aren't, it's as simple as that. The media is making it out to be a bigger issue than it really is. |

Yes. hilarious. Another was when Cowboy, the Vietnam refugee, waxes on about how he doesn't fit Asian stereotypes. Look down to his occupation- Nail Salon Owner |

I think this could be the best survivor in years.. I got bored with the standard ones years ago, and although I watched the past few seasons from time to time, they weren't that great..
The racial thing, plus the fact that at least half of the contests have never watched the show before (mostly honkys apply for survivor, so they had to do some hard-core recruiting to get a suitable minority mix) makes for a fresh look at it IMO..
A lot of stereotypes were sort of reinforced in the premiere.. part of me found it funny, another part of me though the racists were going to have a field day with them.. |
