I am scheduling a job interview with Kyungpook University in Daegu. I am already a resident of Daegu and would like to move elsewhere; however, a good job could keep me here.

Does anyone know anything about working with that uni? Any of you already there? I did meet a few foreign KNU-ers at a KOTESOL meeting in May, but I did not get contact info. Seems like a nice crew; now I just want to know about the wok environment itself.

I'm not 100% sure of all of this and I was told it by another who had an interview with them a long time ago. She didn't accept their offer because of one thing...housing. She said it was crap. She didn't want to wash her dishes on the bathroom floor. She also said it was like a hogwan in that you usually do a split-shift similar to Pagoda or somewhere like that. Twenty-five hours is a little high for a university, but the one thing I noticed with regards to their more recent postings is that the salary is much better than it used to be. They also may have improved the housing? Having good co-workers can make a big difference. It looks better than a bad hogwan anyway. I had some great students from KNU at the hogwan I worked at in Dae-goo in '97 if that's any consolation. Sorry that I can't provide you with some more concrete info.

I knew two people who worked there last year. One couldn't say anything positive about the apartment OR the workplace environment. She only lasted a few months, before quitting.
I take her word for it because we once worked together at Daegu U.... and it was a hellhole. She lasted a year there.

The other aquaintance had nothing to complain about at all, regarding Kyungbook. But he was one of those totally care-free kind of guys. Nothing a little yoga couldn't cure.

I had expressed interest in that school a while back, but it was the schedule that turned me off. They scheduled 75 minute classes, and they wanted 8-9 contact hours on some days. I didn't even get into talking about the apartment with them.
However, I did learn there is a choice between a dorm on campus, or a one-room off campus.

I visited a friend who has an apartment on campus at Gyeongbuk University. The building is a bit old and institutionalised, but the flat is ok. My bar is pretty low, but I could definitely handle living there, there is a fair sized bathroom, a separate bedroom and a large living room with a conecting kitchen. The balcony looked out onto a quiet road with trees. The EFL department is in a spanky new building, I'm not sure if all the equipment is working, but they seem to have all the whistles and bells. I have heard that the vacations are short at Gyeongbuk though.
