I am a teacher in a public middle school. Next week I will begin two hour English classes with my Korean colleagues as my students. I have read previous threads on this topic. I am hoping to have some specific responses.

From what I have seen both here and in Thailand it seems that a lot of adult learners have a lot of English in them. I think the trick is getting it out of them and leading them to a sense of confidence when speaking and listening to English.

My first question: Would you generally agree with the following?

Most intermediate students have the greatest competence in the following order:

1. Reading
2. Writing (At least basic sentences where they can express simple thoughts and ideas)
3. Listening ( by this I mean real world listening, where a fluent English speaker speaks at a normal pace)
4. Speaking

I would like to improve my students listening and speaking skills. I have lots of resources that I can create lesson plans from. I would be grateful if others would share specifically what they are having success in teaching to groups like this.

Thanks!

I, too, am a teacher in a public middle school and I'll start teaching teachers for 3 hours at a time, starting tomorrow. Any ideas or recommended books would be greatly appreciated. For the first lesson I'm going to concentrate on introductions, then talk for awhile about my country (the UK) and hometown, before going on to point out some of the differences between British and American English. After that, I'll attempt to start a conversation about a topic and have some example questions etc prepared using real world English, allowing discussions in groups or pairs.

Wow, 3 hours is long, i also teach K teachers at my middle school, 45 minutes long 4 times a week.

I really enjoy teaching them, they are excited about it all the time. We do all kinds of fun things, I started with formal lesson plans but they didn't really want that.

We basiclly hang out and chat, play games or pick a topic and discuss it. I have been doing this for almost 8 months here and about 5 of the 8 regulars have improved thier english a great deal. Actually to the point that 3 of them speak better english than one of the two korean english teachers at school.

After assesing the levels be creative and have fun, most of the teachers will likely be women and there a lot of fun to teach.

I'm going to be doing the same thing as IG, 45 minute classes 4 days a week. I will be using Basics in Speaking by Michael Rost.
