Someone on the thread above said his girlfriend got a better exchange rate because she is Korean. Is this true? -Jeff

I highly doubt that's true. The color banks care about is green.

Seriously?

So if I go in to exchange $100 USD and a Korean goes in and exchanges the same amount, you think the Korean is going to get a better rate?

I just can't believe that.

Exchanging cash is spot +/-2%.
Doing a wire transfer or putting it in your foreign currency account (for a minimum of 1 month, I think) will be spot +/-1%

Since this guy was exchanging cash for a money order, they probably charged him +2%, whereas the charged is kgf +1% (why, I don't know). At least that's my guess. All the rates are posted on the board and noone is going to get better than +/-1% off of spot.

All i kniw is what the agent told us. The GF and I went to the bank together to exchange cash. We were going on vacation. The exchange agent told my girlfriend that it would be cheaper for her to exchange, versus me, a non-korean.
This was at Daegu bank, last year.

the rates may be posted on the board, but they always play around with them. They also offer better rates if you exchange larger sums.
