...and also if you have had any notable experiences with them do let me know (i.e. are they reliable and honest when it comes to salary, accommodation, vacation time etc?).
thanks |

Uh, ummm.... uh...
Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education.
Sounds pretty nasty to me.
Gotta be careful of those government jobs in these 3rd world countries.
They will make strange deductions from your salary for things like Medical insurance, pension plan, and taxes. |

hi
ive worked for a 학원 before and didnt work out too well. i really wanna go to seoul but EPIK (which i believe is my best, securest bet) only deals with the provinces outside of seoul. im not really prepared to go to another 학원 just on the advice of a recruiter.
i didnt know much about SMOE although some of the previous threads on it have been not too flattering and very contrasting... not too surprising i guess....
is korea a third world country btw?
thanks for the info all the same

Actually, Korea is 4th world country.
Just watch how people (especially Koreans) would react to my answer. |

OK...
Sarcasm mode off... Korea is NOT a 3rd world country.
SMOE is as reliable as GEPIK or EPIK in regards to pay and benefits.
Their website is here: http://etis.sen.go.kr/
They are about the same as EPIK and GEPIK but for metropolitan Seoul.
It is a bit of a mixed bag. Some schools are great, some are not so great. It is mostly dependant on your interpersonal skills and those of your co-teacher. If you work well together you will have a great year. If you don't work well together, you will have a bad year. It's all about the relationship. Like any other workplace it will depend on some give and take.
It is not a business for profit so it is different from a hakwon. It is a school and you have to deal with the issues found in real schools. Big classes, mixed abilities and interests, etc.
Good luck. |

| I know a few big recruiters, like WorkNPlay, fill a number of jobs for SMOE. Search through their websites for info. The people I know that have worked for SMOE have really enjoyed it, especially when compared to working for hagwons. People in SMOE rarely seek other positions in Korea if they stay in the country because it is hard to find anything better. Because SMOE only hires during certain seasons, you should plan ahead. |
