Hello,

If an English class is cancelled ( ex. the homeroom teacher needs the students for class elections ), does your school not count it in the 22 teaching hours.

I don't know. I have never taught near my maximum hours yet. If it doesn't say anything in the contract, then it probably isn't counted.

Why?

If you are in a public school, and a lesson is cancelled you will still be paid your full wages. Cancelled lessons are very common, especially during test weeks.

I would think that it doesn't count towards your hours for purposes of calculating overtime. But they can't reduce your salary even if you teach just 5 hours.

Personally, I didn't really like having cancelled classes. It would put my lesson plan structure all out of whack to different classes at different places in the book, because if they were on chapter 7 with the Korean teacher but chapter 6 with me....

Yes, and also some of the classes end early. They may, however, ask that you do some make up classes later if they miss a lot. They asked me and I was more than willing to do it because some of the classes were so far behind.

doesn't make sense to me. If you are scheduled for that time, why should it matter if your class is cancelled.

But I don't work there soo.

I have never come near the 22 hours a week that are in my contract either. Usually around 17. This is a testing week so I'm sitting at about 3...and it's wednesday. Laughing

I'm still pretty new at this so im not 100% sure but im going on the assumption that it doesn't change your wages at all as long as you're still at school for the full day.

Yeah I started the year with 16 and I am now down to 12. The high school seniors (3rd year) are preparing for their SAT tests on Nov 16 so all my classes have been cancelled. And after the test the students have no need to study as they have already taken their university entrance exams too.

High School rocks!

But the pay remains the same. Very Happy

If the school cancels the class (like for your school election) then that class is counted towards my total hours. However, if one of my afternoon classes is cancelled because of something like getting my ARC or I have to go observe a class at a different school or it's a national holiday then it is not counted towards the total hours.

Makes a difference since I have a 31 hour schedule.

31,wow,thats quite a lot.How many overtime hours do you have then?

I work for Seongnam Education Board this year, rather than Seongnam City Hall.If there's nothing to do I don't have to stay, unlike before.

Thats pretty cool.Unlike before when my "office" would be invaded by 40 ajummas on test days.
