Like many of you, I'm a daddy. And like many of you, I have a son. And there is a special relationship between a father and his son.
One day, my boy will come and ask me for life advice. I've been practicing this moment for years. I've worked out the scenario in my head.
Iron Mike comes and asks his daddy for life advice: "Dad, what's this whole life thing all about?"
I look thoughtfully at my boy. "Son, life is nothing more than a house of cards. One minute you'll be poor. The next minute, you'll be making money hand over fist. But it's all an illusion.
"There're so many things that can bump you off. Murder. War. Disease. Work as hard as you can and pray your luck holds out. And thank Jesus you weren't born in Chad or the Republic of the Congo."
My son looks at me with his big brown eyes and says this: "Dad, you're a real freaking idiot."
I say this: "Well, what do you want from me? Who do I look like? Socrates? Now go to the fridge and get old dad a beer. And don't tell your mother!"
Ahhh, those moments of a father and son bonding.
Christ, I ain't looking forward to that. |
