Today I ran over another alligator.

I've killed about five of them this year. I run over them on highway 82 in Louisiana. I have to go this way to get to Cameron.

I don't mean to kill them. It's just that they are all over the place.

We really need to start hunting them again.

I don't own a rig.

I used to drive a semi cross-country as a company man.

Now I have a flatbed work truck that can haul about 6000 pounds. That's what I own.

I use it to haul oil-field stuff. Welding Machines. Bottle racks. Air compressors. Stuff like that.

I'm about to purchase a mini-float. I'm going to make the purchase after hurricane season ends.

I'll make an absolute killing--up to three thousand a week, provided the oil fields don't go bust. That could happen It happened in the early 80's.

If it happens, I guess I'd just have to go back to driving cross-country. The thought of teaching again makes me want to puke.

And that's not a shot at anyone. I have nothing but admiration for those with enough patience to hang around young people without pulling their hair out the roots.

Lets get back to the alligators for a minute.

You claim you run them over and you're happy about that. Does it ever occur to you that you might be torturing the poor animal? Do you sleep well at night knowing that you broke it's back and it was prolly screaming to mommy all day in the heat till it died? I'm going to assume you run them over because of your moral system, you prolly think that they must be "adrenalized" when they die for the meat to contain the properties you ascribe to it. Therefore, it stands to reason that you prolly will do whatever it takes to get the alligator into a state of full-on adrenaline until the point of death.

Don't tell me you ate the goddam thing too. MURDERER.

I eat alligator.

But it's tough to eat them after you run them over. I'd have to carry an axe and an ice chest to get the tail.

Plus, if you get caught, we're talking a major fine. You have to have a special permit to hunt them, and I think you're ony allowed to take one for the entire season.

Those things are monsters. They hiss at you.

I used to have this fishing hole I hung out at down in Venice. Venice is screwed since Katrina. But this was pre-Katrina.

Anyway, this big ol' six foot alligator was always there. You could see his head poking up out the water.

I'd drink beer and throw the empty cans at his head. He would hiss at me.

I think we kind of liked each other.

Maybe we should start a poll...Who is uglier, Otis or an alligator?

I never tried to catch them. I just enjoyed throwing beer cans at them. I'm a nature boy.

I used to run over lots of frogs when I drove in the county. There was a "frog" season and they'd all come out onto the road at night.

Lots of people in Ontario get killed running into a deer on the road. Thing comes through the windshield. If you're lucky you only kill it and not yourself. If you're even luckier, a hunter will come along and buy the deer from you on the spot. Deer meat is pretty lean.

Running over an alligator must f~ up your car- one thing to drive over it in a pick up (don't they weigh about a ton?), somthing else to run over it in, say, a Tico. Well, not that people drive Ticos in Louisiana. Laughing Gators must be too heavy to pull off the road, too. If you hit a big animal, aren't you supposed to call the Dept. of Fish and Wildlife or something? I almost hit a deer family when I was home in Aug., but I was watching for them, anyway. Driving throught the woods at night in WI, you are bound to see them~

I almost ran over a gator the other night while driving on the Beachline (highway in Orlando, FL).... However, I did nail several gators while in college. A sin, I know, but what is a 'Nole supposed to do?

Frogs? Narsty little creatures. In the early 90's I worked in mall in south Florida that was the ONLY thing west of the expressway (which meant we were smack dab in the "Everyglades." This mall was the largest something-or-other back in the day, so at night after the place closed the parking lot was empty save those who closed the bars down. The lights drew all sorts of bugs from all over and frogs/toads/whathaveyou followed.

We could not get out of the parking lot without running over at least 50~100 critters. It felt like driving on a country road...bumps and potholes every 2 feet.

Speaking of frogs....when I mowed our lawn I had to cut it twice a week in the rainy season. Why? Well, we lived on...ok, next to, a lake and all the frogs would come on our property. If the grass was low enough I would see them in advance and could go over and harass them to move over (mostly, I was just beligerent with them. Sometimes I used disparaging remarks...you know the kind.) Why would I bother with them?

I had a push mower. What goes up must come out. You try picking, even spraying, frogs guts off your legs. Since I dindn't want to shave my legs (which would have made cleaning them off easier), I opted to put cling wrap around my legs (one at a time, no need to hop...you know). I'd usually suck up 10 frogs per mowing.

The worst, however, was when I trimmed with the weed eater. Once in a while I'd have a suicide froggy...I sliced one right in half. Somewhat surreal.

Oh, well, back to learning Java....

!shoosh,

Ryst

on hot summer nights in Virginia, just after a rain, the roads would steam, which the frogs and toads just loved. dad would take me driving (slowly) and we'd stop the car when we found a bunch. then we'd catch them, look at them, and let them go. i guess other drivers weren't as careful or curious, so sometimes we'd see frog pancakes.

Surprisingly the damage is usually minimal because they are built so low to the ground. It's like running over road debris. A couple little bumps and it's over.

That's a nice story. What a refreshing change from the garbage we often see here on the boards.
