I'm no big fan of the EPL.
Why? Everyone knows who is going to win right at the beginning of the year.
They might as well just call the season off and give the trophy to Chelsea.
The EPL needs a salary cap. |

ok going to have to bite at this one.
Portsmouth being top of the table, very predictable. (ok i grant this may be in the short term).
Liverpool and Tottenham in the bottom 6 very predictable. Chelsea have already lost this season
3 different winners of the league in 4 years. The top 2 hasnt been the same this century. (ok only 6 years old)
Chelsea 2 years of success is no different than Barca in Spain, Ac in Italy (even with match fixing) Lyon in France and Porto in Portugal.
In terms of salary cap it would only work if fifa implement it world wide. I can't see it happening unless clubs make a stand and even then someone will also ignore it. Salary cap would just increase other bonuses like signing on fees. |

nobody who knows anything about the game calls it 'the epl', anyway.
but i do agree that the beautiful game is going to *beep*. i'll support man united again when glazer is out and fans are treated with more respect, but thats not going to happen any time soon; i used to go as a kid in the days of cantona, hughes, robson, schmeichel, etc. but i'll never go again. the sheep-like fans who line up to spend a fair percentage of their miserable salaries are complete suckers, and are being laughed at by players, owners, and sports media alike. screw the lot of 'em, i say! |

No kidding. Do you know a ticket at Upton Park is 45 quid? I've heard West Ham fans are being priced out, and that the majority of supporters in the stands are from other areas of London.
45 quid. Christ. |

Why don't you like Glazer? Because he's American? |

i don't like glazer because he has no connection to manchester, and knows nothing about the game. he bought united with a kind of junk-bond style financing which means the debt actually sits on the club's books, and also he jacked up ticket prices to unbelievable levels.
i know what you're driving with the anti-american thing, but really, thats not it. an american businessman just took over aston villa and they don't hate him.
the glazer thing is just symptomatic of why english football is rotten to the core. why would i support manchester united now? it's no different to supporting hsbc, or general motors. plus the majority of their 'fans' are utterly moronic, so i'd rather not be one of them. |

I'd recommend supporting the 'Peoples' club - Everton. An Everton through-and-through chairman and ticket prices starting from 25 quid - cheap for an established Premiership club. |

Why don't you change your evil ways and support Glasgow Rangers? |

That's no excuse, bobby. I'm American.
Have you ever been to a Rangers v. Celtic match? There's nothing like it in the entire world.
You sit in the stands tanked up on beer and Bell's whiskey. You sing. You swear.
And it's cold. Real cold. None of that English pooftah cold. It's cold and damp. Pneumonia weather.
It's absolutely perfect.
If someone held a gun to my head and said I couldn't support Rangers, then I'd just go ahead and become a Fenian and support Celtic.
Yeah, I'd be a papist, but what the hell? I'd still be able to watch the matches.
Ibrox wants you, big bobby. We demand your presence.
She's been asking for you, big bobby! |

er, thanks
i'd love to go and watch celtic vs rangers, but i wouldn't really care who won.
a friend of mine who is normally really passive happens to be a celtic fan, and the mere mention of the word 'rangers' is enough to bring him out in a rash, or start shouting slogans in support of the IRA. interesting stuff, for sure! mind you, both sets of fans would probably want to beat my head in for being english.. |

I agree with Otis actually.
My footy taste has always been Champions League, top 5 in Italy (the whole league in 90s), top 5 in Spain, top 3 in Premiership, Bayern Munich and their nearest challengers (Werder Bremen in recent memory) in Germany.
The problem with football these days is that - yes - it's predictable, but not so much as in it's a foregone conclusion who's gonna win the title, but rather you know who the top 5's gonna be. The Champions League - since we started letting sides qualify who finished 2nd, 3rd, 4th in the strong leagues, means that the world's best players - a sizable percentage - is dispersed (quite equally, in my view) across the Champions League ever-presents. Man U in recent seasons have underperformed but the lack of real competitiveness means they've not been fully punished. United are always sitting pretty in the CL, raking in the millions that it brings.
I've been saying this for years and it still hasn't happened yet, but we're heading towards a Euro Super League. What I'd like to see happen before that is the domestic leagues cut in half, because there are far too many games. There's a lot of dross in the Prem - as indeed there is in other leagues, as someone said (correctly) in my Italian footy thread (General forum). I happen to prefer the Italian to the Prem, but I've nothing objective to offer as to why I think it's the best. In reality, they're probably equal (with Spain too) since all three have an elite of 3 or 4 CL ever-presents and a whole lot of dross.
I'm the same as Bobby actually - went to Old Trafford in the 90s. The necessity of weekend and part-time jobs post-high school meant I hardly went in those years however. I didn't oppose the Glazer takeover at all, since I assumed he had a business plan that he feels is gonna make the club (and him) richer. |
