Solomon islands is like the Iraq of the pacific islands at the moment....it is a complete mess.
The islanders burned down the Chinatown section of Honaira(the capital) about 5 months ago which produced over 75% of the money that came into the country...
This from Wiki

In April 2006 allegations that the newly elected Prime Minister Snyder Rini had used bribes from Chinese businessmen to buy the votes of members of Parliament led to mass rioting in the capital Honiara. A deep underlying resentment against the minority Chinese business community led to much of Chinatown in the city being destroyed. China sent chartered aircraft to evacuate hundreds of Chinese who fled to avoid the riots. Further Australian and New Zealand troops were dispatched to try to quell the unrest. Rini eventually resigned before facing a motion of no confidence in Parliament, and Parliament elected Manasseh Sogavare as Prime Minister |
So the australians came in to restore order but this week Australias' top diplomat/ambassedor has been booted out and now Australia is pissed and will eventually pull out and there will be a big security problem, all the money in the form of the chinese has left the country and the government is a basketcase.....major problem just waiting to explode

My good mate from Uni is a Malaitan, well half, and has strong family ties to the Solomons. He ended up working there for the UN after finishing his MA, doing post-conflict reconstruction work. Basically, it involved getting former militants to hand in their weapons and submit a business plan in return for a cash grant.
Tourism has been set back, what little there was, by the civil war. Previous to that the place was a niche spot for game fishing. Travel in the south Pacific is expensive due to big distances and small populations. Be -prepared to wait around if you want to island hop.
Finally, the islands are reportedly beautiful, have lots of natural resources and great beaches. However, there are easier places to go in the region with much the same environment. I'd recommend Fiji. |

I thought the Solomons had been blacklisted by governments owing to effective civil war. Then it was nearly obliterated by a typhoon. Doesn't sound quite the paradise right now... However, there are literally thousands of islands extending from Papua down to the Australian coast, so there should be something accessible and fantastic to see. The nearest I've been are the Whitsundays - still some way off - which were like paradise in the absolute middle of nowhere... Ahhh reminiscences... |

There are some nice places to visit. You would be best flying into Honiara and then moving onto New Georgia for the diving and traveling around. It is pricey but the diving is pretty good.
It has some good eco tourism and I hope to go sometime next year. I could give you an email of someone in the capital who could provide better info.
It is rough, though it is a once in a life time experience and I believe well worth doing once. |
