Hello everyone,
I am teaching in Japan right now with the JET programme and would like to move to South Korea next. I want a job at a private English school teaching children in a major city, but I dont know anyone who has already worked there to ask for their advice. I have searched this site (as a JET I have a lot of free time) and have not found the information I am looking for.
So...could you share your experiences (the good, the bad and the ugly) regarding private English schools?? What companies/schools would you recommend working for?
Thanks all! |

Do you mean private, international English schools or private English academies?
If the later, I can tell you to stay well clear of ECC, Wonderland, Ding Ding Dong, and Kids Herald Club chains, unless 1 in 10 or 1 in 20 strikes you as good odds. |

With Ding Ding Dong on your resume you will have a hard time looking serious to any employer in the future. |

Ain't no lie. I used to work for some dodgy outfit called 'Wallaby School.' Needless to say, that information is not on my CV now. It's a blank year. I tell prospective employers that I was in a fugue.
Advice for juliaschuessler: stay in Japan. You have been warned. Also, it might not be a good idea to sign on to message boards like this using your real full name. |

Since there is a ton of information about private language schools (aka hogwons) on this web site you either haven't looked very hard or need to be more specific about what you want to know about them.
If you haven't been able to find any information about hogwons I might suggest doing a search on the word "hogwon". If that doesn't turn up enough information for you, you might also try the alternate spelling "hakwon".
In all seriousness, if you are looking for from the FAQ that would be good to start with:
Getting a Job -Hagwons, Unis, EPIK & Public Schools
Getting a Job - Korea Vs Japan, Taiwan and China
Choosing a Location in Korea
FYI - Deceptive Practices By Hagwons
Since you are already living in Japan, it might also be worth your while to just come over to look for a job once you've touched base with some recruiters and set up some job interviews.
If you have more specific questions, please let us know. Good luck. |
