posting this up because it wasn`t up here and it looks like a few of you haven`t been reading up on the news. a military coup ousted the current thai government in a non-violent overthrow.

canadian government advises:

Quote:
You are advised against all travel to the far southern provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, Yala, and Songkhla (including the city of Hat Yai), where almost daily attacks continue to occur including attacks with firearms, bombings, beheadings, arsons, and attacks with knives. There is no indication that the frequency of the attacks will decrease. On September 16, 2006, bombs exploded in Hat Yai (Songkhla Province), resulting in deaths and injuries. Several foreigners were killed, including one Canadian.

Don't be a drama queen. You're 1000 times more likely to get hit by a car and killed in Korea than die in a terrorist bomb in Thailand....or even Afghanistan for that matter.
Were you even planning on going to the extreme south of Thailand anyway?

Actually - you're wrong!

They've abolished the 2am curfew in BKK.
Hands full with other crap I guess.
It's back to the good old days of a ladyboy and a mai tai for breakfast. Laughing

not trying to be a drama queen.. just trying to inform others what is going on in the world. if you have even read anything about this incident in the news.. u would know it has nothing to do with terrorists.

actually... i would like to know from people who actually live in thailand, what the general feeling and consensus is about the uphevel.

So what's this quote in your OP all about then???

Quote:

Because that's essentially irrelevant to the current political "crisis" / readjustment, whatever you want to call it.
I was talking to a Thai friend today and it's business as usual.
Most of those state department warnings are excessively dramatic.
Read them, be aware of them but take them with a grain of salt.
And BTW if you want to hear advice from people who are actually living in Thailand re: the current climate you'd probably get a more fruitful response on ajarn or even nanaplaza.com than you will on a Korean esl site.

It's business as usual here (in Thailand). Simply stay away from the far south. There are plenty of things to do and see elsewhere anyway.

wow.
shock factor... wonder if the thais are any closer winning the battle against extremists in the south? They aren't going to tolerate this threat to their tourist dollar much longer

Why would you cancel your travels to Thailand when it's "non-violent" and expats currently in country, as well as news reports, claim that it's "business as usual"?

You're reporting news here in the same manner as it would be reported in America - it's "Fear Mongering" is what it is.

Thailand is, for the most part, very safe for expats as it always has been. You're more likely to get killed on the roads in Thailand than in any conflict related to the military take over, in my opinion.

Relax. Take your vacation in Phuket.

If there is one thing Thailand can't afford, it is to hurt their tourist industry. Stopping tourism would kill their economy and would be about the most counter-productive thing in the history of the universe. Now, if the rebels in the south start doing shit, that is a whole different ball-game.

I lived in Bangkok and my wife is Thai. The coup changes nothing except getting rid of that azz Taksin. Most Thais support it.

Haha, several of my friends were in a bar a few blocks away when the tanks rolled up. They said "Oh there is a coup and tanks? BARTENDER give us another beer!"
