French newspaper says Saudis believe bin Laden dead
09-23-2006, 10h38
PARIS (AFP)

A French newspaper published what it said was a report by the country's intelligence services that said Saudi Arabia believes Osama bin Laden died of typhoid in Pakistan this month.

France's defence ministry issued a statement saying the newspaper report "cannot be confirmed" and that Defence Minister Michele Alliot-Marie had ordered an investigation "to determine the source of this leak, which is a crime punishable by law."

France's foreign intelligence service, the DGSE, also refused to confirm the report, and no immediate official reaction was forthcoming from Saudi officials Saturday.

But European and Pakistani officials tracking bin Laden's whereabouts told AFP, on condition of anonymity, that the report could not be seen as reliable.

Often rumoured to be dead in the past -- only to appear later in audio or video recordings -- the leader of the Al-Qaeda terror network was believed to have taken refuge on the border region between Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Previous reported rumours have said that he suffered from a kidney disorder and was in poor health.

The French regional newspaper l'Est Republicain published what it said was a DGSE report dated September 21.

"According to a usually reliable source, the Saudi security services are now convinced that Osama bin Laden is dead," the DGSE report quoted by the newspaper said.

It said that "information gathered by the Saudis" indicates that bin Laden "might have succumbed to a very serious case of typhoid fever resulting in partial paralysis of his lower limbs while in Pakistan on August 23, 2006.

"His geographic isolation provoked by constant fleeing is believed to have made medical assistance impossible (and) on September 4, 2006, the Saudi security services received preliminary information of his death."

L'Est Republicain said the Saudis were "waiting to obtain further details and notably the exact place of burial before officially announcing the news."

As I saw on another forum, this is bad news. If Allah gets him before the Americans the terrorists win.

The Saudis seem to think he's dead. The US simply says it can't confirm his death, which is the wise thing to do at this time. But, just because they are playing it safe doesn't mean he isn't dead. I guess we'll have to wait and see. But, the US does have a good reason to doubt his death:

"U.S. officials have suggested that his death would be accompanied by a surge of e-mail and telephone chatter among bereaved al Qaeda members, if not an actual announcement from the militant network.

But officials said they were not aware of any such chatter in recent weeks."

You might feel better to know that if he had typhoid fever, he died spouting out 'blood and pea-soup-like diarrhoea'.

I sure he's still alive and kicking.

What I don't understand is that those wacko radical Muslims believe that they will all go to heaven and get hooked up with 13(??) virgins. If so, why aren't they all dead yet? Maybe they're all clinging to their lives because the virgins are all fat and ugly. Laughing

If he is in fact dead, I wonder how much longer they would have kept this information secret had it not been leaked.

He died four years ago folks.

Evidence of his existence since then has been shoddy and suspect.

It's simply convenient and useful now, with the upcoming election cycles, for the Bush administration to tell their Saudi royal buddies to fabricate the puppet villian's demise.

Wake up.

Actually, I've always wondered if he was in a secret CIA prison, waiting for the US government to decide when it was most convenient to have him 'captured' or 'killed'.

uh huh. so the tapes are all fabricated? it wouldn't have been useful for him to have "died" right before the last presidential election?

Of course not! The Republicans got lots of votes from scared Americans worried about boogieman Bin Laden. The fear was that Kerry would be too soft on terrorism and that fear maximized benefitted Bush big time.

The tapes are old. And one audio tape is fabricated.

Bin Laden went from high profile guy, producing tons of tapes, even after 9/11, to suddenly quiet after the massive American bombings of his hilly hideouts. Then in the months that followed a tape came out claimed by the CIA to show Bin Laden is alive but independent European experts were consulted by the media, and their authenticity was considered very suspect. Osama has NOT said anything on any tape to indicate that the tapes had been made in the last four years. Sorry. It's a matter of faith and political spin to talk of him as "out there". Keep the faith bucheon bum, if you want. I'd say it's 70-95% certain he died well before now, depending on one's rational assessment.

One of the two puppets has been and still is made of flesh and blood.
They have had the same puppetmaster the last few years.

If he is dead then someone else will fill his shoes. With what, I don't know. Budampump.

But seriously, folks, it'll probably be some kid from Van Nuys.
