In Canada, these twin girls were refused the opportunity to try out for a boys team.

http://www.cbc.ca/story/sports/national/2006/09/22/hockey-decision.html

In the end they were allowed to try out and they won $3500 bucks each as well as free one-on-one coaching lessons.

Quote:
The MHSAA must also compensate Amy and Jesse $3,500 each in damages for "injury to their dignity, feelings and self-respect."

As well, the association must provide the girls with one-on-one coaching sessions and one session of hockey camp, to "compensate the twins for the loss of skills they have suffered."

I have further heard that they tried out and were cut. As they feel they are too good for the girls team, they will not be playing hockey this year.

Since this decision, 20 boys in this district have demanded to be allowed to play on girls teams (most of them are in sports where the school doesn't have a boys team in their chosen sport i.e. curling- is that a sport?)

Anyways, I guess these two girls aren't that great of players and nobody even heard of them before all of this. Most people believe this could really hurt girls sport.

Those boys demanding to play on laides' teams will be like Cameron from _Ferris Bueller's Day Off"-they will settle for any piece they can get.

That's ridiculous. There are sports like swimming and tennis, where males and females have similar abilities. Then there are sports like hockey where they don't. Ice hockey also requires lots of dressing and undressing, thus inconveniencing everyone on a mixed team.

If I ever have a son in Canada and want $3,500 I guess I can just try to sign him up for synchronised swimming?

The boys should counter-sue. I mean, isn't this attempt to denature them an injury to their dignity, feelings and self-respect?

That is rediculous. They say the main argument is that they should be able to play with people of their ability. What about boys who can't make the boys team but would make the girls team?

It's going to backfire in twenty years-- what if school systems decided that the litigation isn't worth the hassle and made all sports co-ed?

Many girls would be at a disadvantage.. until, of course, some Canadian judge ordered that the stronger boys have weights strapped to their feet to slow them down.

...swimming is probably not a good example.

Nobody's saying that the team should be forced to KEEP them. The point is that they should have to let them TRY OUT. If they aren't good enough, everybody at the tryout can see that. Probably better to say "men" and "women" too. The younger you go, the more likely it is that the girls at any given age group are just as big, fast and skilled as the boys.
