Hi All
I am taking Korean classes and I thought it might be quite cool to take the Korean Language Proficiency Test.
Has anyone taken the Korean Language Proficiency test in Seoul and if so, how much was it?

Wow, this question gets asked a lot. I think the last thread on the test was only about four days ago. I think I'm going to write a few pages on the wiki on these tests tonight. There are more than one - some are for Koreans, others for Korean language students, and I think there's another one for factory workers. I took one in 2003 that had six levels; I tried the highest level and then didn't bother to check if I passed because I was distracted and also because I don't think it really helps you with anything. There should be a magazine here for the test like they have in Japan for the JLPT. I used the JLPT to get a visa before in Japan but as far as I know the one here doesn't help at all. Maybe for permanent residency / citizenship. |

Well, I'm sorry. I am on Dave's most days and I can't say I noticed one.

The KLPT has four levels, and is offered four times a year on paper but you can take it online any time you like. The KPT has six levels but is only offered once a year (this coming September 24). You can buy prep books for both at Jonggak station. |

It would probably enhance employment prospects in the country, and perhaps even at home. I don't think it helps to get a visa though as you pointed out. |

Don't count on it.
I'm hoping to get a job where I can use korean, but I don't think any prospective employer would care much about a proficiency test.
If I speak korean in the interview they can quickly see how good or bad my korean is. |

I would be interested in trying it.
Can someone shoot me the web address? I want to try it just fior fun. |

While I agree with that point to some extent, an interview wouldn't reveal your understanding of written Korean. I think the the qualification itself would be a solid back up if you performed well in a face to fact interview. I am sure you know however, that in Korean there are two ways of saying expressing yourself; one is written, and the other is spoken. The language proficiency test focuses on the former. |

There's a lot more information than I thought so this is going to take a few days. I started writing down the information for the test that I think I took. If there are too many pages I'll probably have to subdivide it into their own pages and leave this page as a general intro to each of them.

Unless the grading system has changed since last year, the figures on galbijib are incorrect. (I haven't been informed of a change but it doesn't necessarily mean one hasn't taken place.) One should get above at least 40% in each area, and average above 60% overall. That applies to all 6 tests. |

I just wrote them down yesterday - go to TOPIC안내 and then 응시안내. I'm just writing down what's on the page at present. |

There might well have been a change. I have the level 4 and 5 books (compilations of former papers) and they state that you should achieve a 60% average, with over 40% in each area. I wonder whether they have decided to make things tougher because you can now take the test twice a year. I will ask my Korean teacher and let you know what she says on Friday. |

I asked my teacher and she said she wasn't aware of any change. She will check it out herself. |
