You may have seen VCDs (Video CDs). They're like DVDs, but with the following differences:
- sound and picture quality isn't as sharp, but it's good
- much cheaper (usually about 3,900 won)
- most movies are on two, rather than one, disc
- limited options in the set-up (some Korean ones have English sub-titles, but many do not)
When you buy a DVD, it has the region marked on the box.
Region 3 means only playable in Korea, Region 1 means only playable in North America, and All means region-free and playable anywhere.
My question is: Are VCDs region-free?
(It's an important question to me because if they are, they'd make great Christmas gifts to give to my folks back home.) |

To my knowledge, VCD and SVCD merchandise is region-free, which is to say that I have never encountered a problem. People back home, however, may wish to check upon issues of DVD player compatibility.

Originally, I was going to write something like 'Dude, welcome to 1995' but yeah, I know what you meant. |

Well, they're new to me. I'm pretty technologically-illiterate. Don't let my avatar skills fool you. BoA gives me the superhuman focus of a Zen master. She enables me to transcend my natural boundaries. |

Most newer DVD players play all manner of disc - DVDs, DVD-RWs, VCDs, SVCDs, MP3s, and just regular CDs. You might run into a problem, if your DVD player is more than a few years old. |
