I have met many foreigners in and out of Seoul. Most of the very obese people i've met have had jobs out of Seoul- many working in small village areas. If you're fat is this something that really happens or have my experiences just been a fluke? |

Nope I was quite overweight and I worked in Busan. Since then I lost 36 kilos and now I work in the country side. |

It could be. I haven't seen any obese foreigners in Seoul. Remember, the parents want their kids being taught by classic "white bread" foreigners. |

I think it could happen a lot less if obese Seoul-bound people were trained to say,
dakcha-go, teo mokgoseyo, geumjoorim gongju!
But alas, so many can barely manage an 'annyong'. Still, it might be a revolution worth undertaking. Maybe Lonelyplanet could hand out flyers at the airport or something.
PS On a side note, that was 'starving princess.' But I'd much rather say, 'emaciated princess.' Anybody know that? I thought it was yeongyangbulyang, but I was corrected today. |

My God!
for the OP:
I have found the opposite, as most of the obese people realize there is probably no Dunkin Donuts and McDonald's out in the country side. As one real fatty pointed out once when asking to go into Kimbap Nara, they put weird vegetables on things in there. I'm going to BurgerKing Seriously, if obese people want to lose weight, maybe. If they don't care, I hope they are not dumb enough to go into the country. The McDonald's in my city of 100000 closed down last year |

I brought it up because the only fat people who i met during my first year were living out of Seoul. Some of them were living in the middle of nowhere; i've also had similar experiences during visa runs.
The new guy who is coming to my work is already being mocked by everyone in the office BEFORE HE'S ARRIVED! They boss even said that he's only being hired because they need someone to come soon badly. |

Since more people want to live in Seoul than anywhere else, Seoul hogwons can afford to be pickier about who they hire than hogwons in the provinces. And since looks are more important than any other qualifications in this business, it's only natural that people who don't fit the Korean ideal will end up in less desirable location.
It must be a testament to my dashing good looks that I am able to hold down a job in Seoul. |

Hm..."pushed" sounds so invasive. I think "herded" works better. |

Random Field Sampling
Location: Gyeongbok Palace, Cheongyecheon, Chungmuro (CENTRAL Seoul)
Time: 17.30 ~ right now
Date: 2006.09.21
Observed:
Koreans. Thousands of them. Two were clearly fat, and maybe 10~15 were just on the very chunky side.
Foreigners. Six in total.
-- Two whites in their 60s, possibly the parents of a third 30ish-looking male walking with them in Anguk-dong. The elderly couple looked dumpy, they had beer-guts. Didn't see the "son" clearly but for a brief glance. Looked fairly average weight.
-- One white male walking by himself across the street from Jongmyo. Won't bother sugar-coating it, he was corpulent.
-- One dark-skinned Middle Eastern-looking guy in his late 20s ~ early 30s walking along Cheongyecheon. Not fat but rather flabby and paunchy, as was the Korean dude he was walking with.
-- One white woman in her 30s ~ 40s (it was dark, didn't get a good look) walking near Gyeongbok Palace Stn. Only saw her from behind, though the grrlflend saw her as she was coming towards us and said after the woman passed: "There's another big foreigner", so I turned around in time to gawk like a dumb peasant. |

So you're saying fat farms do work after all. |

Exactly why my girlfriend and I asked for a higher wage....screw qualifications! |
