Don't be a square, man. Like like has been around for like a long time, man.
Like totally, you know. Like gag me with a spoon.
Like listen to this, man, to learn how to use it properly. |

I'm very conscious of it too. Particularly epidemic among caucasian-americans and asian females.
I noticed that Koreans after spending part of K-12 in the U.S... often interject the 'like' word peppered throughout once back in Korea.
Its like a California thing .. which also means its like a Midwest thing. |

I could be wrong, but it seems to me like a trailer-park thing. |

When I lived in NYC.. I became extremely conscious of the word.. because most New Yorkers just don't use it.. but I'd overhear caucasian women (the ones that weren't non-native NYers - usually from California or midwest or something.. (can't recall hearing southerners use the word).. the ones in NYC would generally be studying Law or something professional.. they'd be like using the word 'like' every two seconds.. like that exam was so hard, y'know? like really!
Trailer park talk would pepper the language with lots of swear words! |

Doesn't appear to be.

Valley girl
In the United States, Valley girl, or "Val", is a term coined for boys and girls in the 1970s, originally referring to affluent young women living in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles, California.
Main article: Valspeak
A certain dialect of speech became associated with valley girls which became referred to as "Valspeak," common among teenage females during the 1980s. Words such as "like," "way," "totally" and "duh" were interjected in the middle of phrases and sentences as emphasizers. Narrative sentences were often spoken as if they were questions (high rising terminal). Some of the slang included:
"As - if" (expresses distinct doubt)
"What-Everrrr" (expresses sarcasm & disinterest)
"Totally." ("Yes.", "Definitely.", "I agree.", or "Very much.")
"Like oh my god" (expresses shock). The word "like" is often used alone as a filler. |
One I particularly dislike is: Narrative sentences were often spoken as if they were questions (high rising terminal).
"So, like, I was going to the Galleria after school... (???)"
And it's spoken as though it were a question, as in "You know what I'm saying?" or "Are you with me so far?", so the only possible answers are "Huh?" or "Yeah". Rather like how Koreans talk on the phone. A Korean will state things, a series of facts or observations or intentions, and although they're not really asking you a bunch of questions, you're still supposed to sit there and say "ne... ne.... ne...." like a stupid parrot, and if you don't, they start squawking "Yoboseyo?!! Yoboseyo???!!" as if you'd fallen down dead on the other end of the line or you decided to watch TV instead of listen to them. Quite annoying. I will sometimes not give them that little "ne... ne... ne..." just to exasperate them. |

I have a voice recording of a 조인성 just going "neee... neehhhh.." in his deepest, post-coffee soothing voice. I put that on play when my girlfriend calls, and then I just go make dinner or look at pr0n or something.
Smackalicious. |

I knew this korean girl who would say the word 막 as if it was 'like'. I agree that stuff like that clogs up the language, but people who complain about it adamantly tend to be those insufferable douchebag types who think they are George Carlin but don't realize they're just stodgy whiners. |

That's a d*ck move. They say the "ne ne ne" because everybody else says the "ne ne ne" and it's just a social norm. So when you're silent they naturally assume the phone is dead. I mean, that's what I assume. But you think you're somehow so above it all and can't be bothered to speak during the course of what is a conversation. Classic d*ck move! |
