Trying to decide whether to get the new 80 gig video Ipod
or wait for a 'true' video ipod? (with hopefully a bigger screen)

I do like the V43 as well, but the smaller hard drive is a drawback.

Depends. What do you figure your ratio of audio to video playback time would be? If you spend 90% of your time listening to music, I'd say buy it. However, if you're closer to 50/50, I'd say get something with a bigger screen.

It's true that the 30GB V43 is small in comparison to the 80GB iPod but, I've always found 30GB enough. Even when I went on a 2 week vacation in June with my V43 I was able to put more than enough TV, movies and audio to last.

Does the iPod Video support .AVI (or DIVX files)? That's what the majority of downloadable video is.

Agreed.

The iPod is restricted to playing only 1 format whereas the V43 (and all the other true media players) can play DIVX/MPG/AVI etc etc.

You will have to convert all your videos which is bloody tedious.

If you get a program like iSquint (only for Macs), it's very easy and straightforward to convert whatever video you want to iPod format.
Also, if you get the program Handbrake from the same people, you can rip DVDs to iPod format, or even just rip selected chapters from those DVDs.

Both programs are free.

I find my 60 GB 5th gen. invaluable for backing up my music and photos. Just plug it in and it syncs. a 30 GB would be too small

Free!! Wow! That sells it for me! Wink

Personally, I would never use a portable media player which would require a lengthy conversion process to play anything that was DIVX/AVI. Most video on the internet is in those formats. Anything thing I download I can transfer directly to my V43 from my PC. The transfer speed is roughly 1GB per minute. I can transfer a whole season of The Simpsons (24 episodes, over 4GB) in less than 5 minutes. No mess. No fuss.

Compare that to using a video iPod. I would need to plan ahead and spend a lot of time converting. I have a pretty fast PC but converting, for example, a DVD to a 1/4 sized .avi version takes almost 3 hours. If I had to do that for everything I download I would go nuts.

You must really, really want to buy Apple to put up with a Video iPod and its limitations.

I wouldn't buy one.

It's a sexy looking device but I really am not the type of person who will outlay significant cash to watch visuals on a 2.5 inch screen. I'll be waiting for fully surrounded, stereoscopic goggles/glasses.

80 gig storage space would be nice but a small external hardrive would be a far better and less painful/time consuming option than the video iPod. I'm still struggling to just get my music stored correctly on a 60 gig iPod. Talk about a hassle. iPods are by no means the best option for portable data storage and the inbuilt limitations suck.

I used to be a believer.

Don't you think newer versions of the ipod will have the capability to play more formats or are they doing that with PURPOSE?

Apple had always tried to promote their own formats like QT, and borrowed technologies like AAC and MP4 with very little success. Who knows? It took them over 20 years to make a multi-button mouse so maybe sense might have caught up.

Yes, there is a purpose. Ipod=Itunes. Itunes=Money. Apple doesn't want you downloading video off the internet for free. Therefore, they restrict the format you can use.

Get the 80 gigger. With tech the wait can be ad infinitum.

- You mean this? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITV

- So its a box that connects to a TV, shouldn't the Mac mini do this anyway?

- Those overpriced 640x480 movies are going to look soooooo good stretched out on my 30" LCD.

- I heard it cost $300. Laughing Laughing Laughing How much was that iHiFi again?
