HONG KONG The writers of Jackie Chan's latest film toned down the script to please Chinese censors, who thought the villainous character portrayed by Chan was too evil, a news report said Tuesday.

A spokesman for Chan confirmed that mainland censors had expressed concerns about the script, but said the writers had made only minor changes in response.

In "Rob-B-Hood," Chan plays a gambling addict who kidnaps a tycoon's baby grandson, but later has a change of heart and protects the baby from the gangsters for whom he works.

Chan told the Xin Kuai Bao newspaper that an early draft of the script portrayed his character as a full-fledged bad guy, but mainland Chinese censors rejected the idea.

"In the first draft of the script, my character is the most evil I've ever been. He hits women, burns people with cigarettes. But it was rejected by censors. The Chinese government said Jackie Chan can't be so evil," Chan reportedly said.

Solon So, a spokesman for Chan, said the censors had "comments" about the script, but that the writers made only small modifications, which he declined to describe.

"Jackie's character is still quite bad," So said.

"Rob-B-Hood" had to be cleared by Chinese censors to be shown in mainland China, an increasingly important market for Hong Kong film makers.

And some of you guys would rather China be in control of the world than America ???

Yeah, like the American government doesn't have a hand in what gets produced in Hollywood ? And doesn't have a censorship board that vets anything that gets shown in America ?

Be glad you don't work for Al-Jazeera...

Every government has a hand in everything. But I still wouldn't want China to be the superpower, would you?

ANd yes, look at that stupid ABC movie they made a couple weeks ago. Pure politics.

Yeah, Jackie Chan is so good at playing the hero that the censors felt they had to stop him. Rolling Eyes
