Hi there,
I've been working for a public high school since June and my employer has not been taking out any taxes from me. They said it's because if you make under a certain amount in a year, you don't have to pay taxes. Do you know if this is true? I'll be making a total of 13,000,000 in 2006, not including my housing allowance. Are there any websites which give information on the Korean tax system?
Thanks! |

Ummm....Let's see. June to December....7 months. Maybe I should check that...June, July, August, September, October, November, December...Yep, 7 months.

Assuming you did not work in Korea before June, then you are making in the neighborhood of W2 million a month.
Sorry, I don't know if what you said is true or not but it's possible. |

I'm definitely not an authority on this, but if you're not Canadian, I believe in the public school system you are tax exempt for the first two years, including any prevous work experience in country. I don't kow though if they are still supposed to take it and then you get a refund. I would suggest calling the tax office and finding out. You don't want to get hit with a "pay this amount" demand later... |

The OP said public high school NOT hogwan.
The truth is that most PEOPLE are ignorant about taxes in every country in the world, because income tax systems are all overly complex and confusing.
Under Korean tax law, you should be paying your taxes now. If you have your health insurance and pension set up, they you should just be patient. They'll get around to your income taxes eventually. If not, you have a small bonus. |

Thanks for your feedback everyone. Yeah I'm not Canadian so I think the two year rule applies to me. |
