|
|
I see that wireless modems for laptops can be bought for around 30-40,000w in Yongsan. I had a look at a year-old Nespot page with rates... Is anyone here using the service, or the competing one? Is it expensive (like, more than a PC bang)? Worthwhile?
Apparently all McDonalds in the country are set up on the Nespot system (this from a post on Pusanweb). Seems like a cool thing... anyone have a clue about it? |

Hi lemon! I'm currently using Nespot wireless for my laptop...rate is 42,000 montly but I get an 8000 discount 'cause I went with a 1 year contract...maybe a little pricey but I've been happy with it...I use it all over Seoul and have used it in Gangwon-do and points south... |

We can use wireless internet all over Seoul? In our homes? Is it the same speed as DSL/VDSL, etc? |

NESPOT basically works this way.
One - standard Internet. You get a wireless modem, and you can only use your account on this modem. Same as getting any other ADSL modem, only without a wire running to the computer. Same price as well I believe.
But if you pony up an extra 10,000 Won a month, you can use your password to log onto any NESPOT modem anywhere. Anywhere you can get a signal, you can hit the Internet. |

Does anyone know if there's an hourly charge over and above the monthly subscription fee (like, 2000w an hour or something like that)?
Thanks for the info. Very helpful. |

You can't automatically hop from receiver to receiver. When you are too far away from one, you have to log onto another unit. Each receiver is good for about 150M.
Example. When I walk along the roof, I connect to my modem. When I go downstairs and sit in front of Pizza Hut, I have to connect manually to a new modem. When I walk down to the shopping centre, I have to connect to a new modem.
If you want to do the bus thing, you'll need to get a wireless modem and subscribe to their wireless Internet service. That costs about 100,000 Won and you pay per megabyte. If you buy a bulk plan, you can get it for 200 Won a megabyte or so. With that, you can sit on the bus and read websites all the way. |

Is this a difficult thing or is it just a matter of changing a setting? Does the laptop sense when it's near a new hotspot?
I'm away for most of August but I think you've talked me into it for when I return. So there's no minute/megabyte fee for the hotspot-based wi-fi, only the 40,000w subscription fee?
My university has just installed one of these transmitters, and apparently most of the campus is in range. I've seen the tech out with his notebook testing it under trees, etc. Added incentive - I could do marking outside... |
