The recent news headlines that the world�s first p**** transplant has just taken place may have drawn guffaws, sympathy and sniggers from many parts of the world, but here in Korea it has only drawn wry amusement. For Koreans know that the first transplants were actually performed here by pioneering local medical practitioner, Dr. Hwang Yoo-Suk. His services have been sought by huge numbers here and have brought untold happiness to thousands.

Dr. Hwang first got the idea of p**** transplants during his residency in the United States. �It was after a baseball game with some of the faculty,� he said. �We were in the showers and I was struck by the size of the white men�s p****es or �gongs� as they called them. I must admit that I felt a little embarrassed. I had never thought that I was inadequate in any way, even to the smallest degree,� although he later added, �I didn�t think much of it after that.�

Like all Koreans he witnessed the rise of Korea to become one.....

Actually, the guy who owns the beauty shop downstairs from my hagwon was telling me that you can get pene size enhancement in Korea. I really don't know what set him down the path of this conversation, but he frankly stated to me that Korean men have the smallest in the world, and that many of them get surgery to improve the size. He said they remove fat from some part of your body (I think it was the top-outside corner of the chest, near the armpit) and implant it.

Maybe that just increases girth. Maybe he's completely wrong. Either way, it was the most interesting conversation I've had in Korean thus far. Much better than "where are you from".

Well, this whole thing is only a little stranger than women going under the knife to get themselves "tightened" so they'll (physically) be virgins again.

I was shocked when I found out about that surgery- imagine the woman pretend she doesn't know what she's doing on her wedding night:
"Oh it hurts! I'm so glad I saved myself for you!"

The girl surgery is actually quite common. In societies where the virginty, or more to the point, the hymen is intact, there are many doctors who offer this. I live in the Philippines. You can get it done for 5000 or so pesos, or about 100US. I heard about a girl in Manila who went around "selling" her "cherry" to foreigners for a pile of money. Then she would get it fixed, and sell it again. Kinda freaky, but I guess if thats your thing...
