I am not a complainer or a newbe. I came to Sampcheonpo with my eyes wide open. What has happened is hard to believe but true. When I arrived (Nov.05) I was oused in the oldest apartment complex here. IT HAD NO SHOWER. I requested one be installed abd was told it was not possible and that I could go to public bath. Ok but that cost me 70,000 W per month. I chalked this up to living Expenses. Then the bomb came this week when I was told I owed the Director 820.000 for a trip he mede to look for a larger buliding. It seems 4 months ago when askked what suggestions I had to improve the academy, I said get a bigger plaace. This is just few of the obsticals teaching in rural Korea. Anyone got any suggestions? He spent W820,000 on the trip?
Just say that you're not going to subsidize anybody's visits to barbershops. |

First of all, you should not have been paying for your baths. Cleanliness is a part of the job and the means to accomplish it are minimum requirements of housing.
That other thing is totally ridiculous.
Your response should be to begin looking for another job. There are schools who are desperate to find a teacher at the beginning of the semester. Hand in your resignation letter Monday morning. |

This has nothing to do with teaching in rural Korea...
I have taught in rural Korea for the past 5 years and have had nothing but kindness and fantastic directors....
Your director is just using you and being an asshole and maybe he is excusing this by saying this is how it is done in the countryside...that is not true at all
You are being used, plain and simple....nothing to do with locality |

I think the OP is an attempt to troll the "apologists".
Either that or he's an idiot.
I go with the former though. |

"IT HAD NO SHOWER"
If you're for real, then show up to to class for a few days without showering. |

Great idea. Seriously. Watch the students bail because the teacher stinks.
Not his fault. No Shower.
Hey Boss: Want to keep your students? |

My nearly four years in rural hagwons leads me to concur.
You simply have one of the bad apples in the peninsula-wide Korean barrel. |

When I first read this, I thought more fool you for unpacking in the first place. I would have walked out and never stayed there. But now that you are there... here's a few suggestions
1. demand something else immediately
2. threaten to tell immigration, jor any other government department you can think of.
3. leave
4. demand repayment for your bathhouse costs
5. book into a hotel and don't pay...tell the owner that the director is paying...stay until he gets you another apartment. He will have to pay - he is respoinsioble for you while you are in Korea
6. tell other hagwan owners and ask their advise (name and shame)
7. leave and blacklist him online - I'm sure someone will be happpy to post the internet address
8. go to the mayor in your town - twll him you are being treated badly and could he help
9. refuse to teach until it is sorted
10. moan to us and do nothing.
But I really hope you can assert yourself and get a better deal. |
