Did you see his speech at the UN? Classic. He's calling Bush the DEVIL, and then at the end of his long speech, he says, "I smell sulphur in here". I get the feeling he thinks he's bullet-proof because he survived a U.S.-backed coup (allegedly), and is best friends with Castro, who the U.S. can't kill. He also was giving props to Noam Chomsky's latest, something about hegemony and the U.S. so looks like he's starting a new book club to rival Oprah. This is going to be a hell of a drama as it plays out over the next decade: Iraq, Iran, Israel, Afghanistan, Venezuela, North Korea, Cuba, China. I liked what Chavez said about the Pax-American and Neo-conservatism not benefiting the world. It does seem to me like the rich get richer, and the poor continue to get f@#$ed over. But, at least with market forces, Multi-nationals have incentive to even things out by taking some jobs to poorer countries. I think the whole hegemonic argument is compelling; does the U.S. actually have any believers in it, outside of the U.S.? As they say, power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Let's hope the next U.S. president can make some corrections, but I think the CIA may be running America at the moment. |

That's the dumbest post ever.
It's so dumb that you could actually win an award for that one. |

chavez has gone too far. hating bush is one thing (and don't we all..) but i don't think its possible to justify getting close to iran on grounds of principle. he's just another power-mad leader who is not all that different to that which he claims to hate. |

You're happy about brutal dictatorships like Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela having power?
You think Hugo Chavez is any kind of solution to the gap between the rich and poor getting wider? Socialist countries have a bad track record of that.
So you think absolute power corrupts absolutely, but you're happy about it being concentrated in Hugo Chavez's hands? At least in the US powers are separated...
And by the way, shouldn't this be in the Current Events forum? |

there was an interesting article in the Herald-Tribune about how well-read Chavez is. but he's a big fan of Mao and Che.
i'd prefer a charismatic leader who's anti-Bush that i can actually agree with. |

anyone who can get the people to take a look at American hegemony is good in my books. You forget that America, the land of the free, has never been interested in freedom for others. They only wish democracy on countries if it serves America's purposes. The UN does need reforms, as Chavez pointed out, as the inability to act due to security council veto used by the U.S. shows, along with a million other examples. And, the sulphur jab was priceless. Chavez should go on tour. |

and Otis, you're from America, and aren't you from Louisiana? You should be the last guy defending Bush. Hello Katrina? Bush isn't even interested in protecting the poor in his own country, let alone 3rd/developing nations. |

Don't bring Katrina into this and that whole Bush doesn't care about the poor nonsense. I blame the locals for that fiasco, and if Bush didn't care about the frickin' poor he wouldn't be trying to help illegal immigrants from the 3rd world as you say stay in the country completely against the wishes of 3/4's of the US population! |

Bush's speech was pretty standard, but he did make a decent point. One of the results of our military action in the middle east since 2001? Over 50 million people are now being represented by democratically elected/appointed officials in the United Nations.
Other than that is was the usual "terror, fear, freedom" stuff he coughs up. |

Where did you get that blasphemener was happy about it?
Also, how about some statistics showing that socialist countries are worse than capitalist countries at reducing the income gap...
Chavez was great at the beginning, but he's starting (started awhile ago) to go off the deep end. He had a bad start (attempted coup) but then came back and was democratically elected and for the first while was very good at what he did, which was representing the large majority who actually elected him, to the horror of the minority elite. He's gone too far now, and has been corrupted by power (or as a response to the backhanded attempts of the elite to discredit him), but for many years, despite what the elite tried to tell the world he was doing, he was a great president. |

Chavez has never been great.
He's just another Marxist hack who rules his banana republic as a dictator.
Is he good to the poor? No. He might throw them some bread now and then.
If he was good for the poor, he'd create an economic system where the poor could actually find jobs and buy their own bread. |

You are forgetting that this isn't allowed in the international economic system we have now... |

Weird. I actually agree with Otis 100%. Go have sex right now, I think the universe may be about to fall apart.
Anyway, yeah, a real proponent of freedom. Attempted coup in 1992... strongarming his way into much increased power with the 1999 constitution... election fraud the next year... government intereference in union affairs... attacks on freedom of the press... yes, he is quite the democrat. |
