W Institute used to be known as Ewha. They are a chain that generally has a bad reputation. You can do a search on here and you can find out many things. But it can also depend on the location. Do you have an offer from a specific location?

They won't/don't pay your salary on time. Sometimes they just don't pay at all.
They won't pay your pension.
They won't pay your medical (you will NOT be in the national plan).
If your plane ticket is NOT bought by them you will NOT get re-imbursed.
You will not get your severance or return ticket without a fight at the labor board.
They WILL steal your deposit.

Other than these few smallish problems they are a great chain.

I was offered a job at the Ansan location. Sounds like they have a lot of problems. What happened to Ewha? I thought Ewha was generally considered a good place to work.

Not true of every Ehwa. I had a half-decent job at one. The pay wasn't great, and the intensive session sucked, overworked and underpaid, but overall it was tolerable and the co-workers and most of the students were nice. I think one can do better though, and I think it is risky to sign on with that chain.

That was this year. It was a new school. I worked there just 6 months, some complaints about something, but left on good terms.

Not a wonderful job or place to work, but at least average. I figure there are worse, and it was pretty stable at least.

It depends mainly on the boss, right?

I love that they ripped off the name of Ehwa Women's University, were sued, changed their name to W, and then ripped off the Volkswagen logo for their new school. *face palm*

That should, frankly, speak volumes about the kind of place you'd be teaching at. They don't learn their lesson...

Have a friend who left a W school in June of this year.. He got paid in full before he left, his severence, housing deposit.. plane ticket.. etc.. Just because some dave's poster posts it.. doesnt mean it is true..

Always, ask for the email addresses or phone numbers of the foreigners presently working at the school.. get in contact and ask them. They usually will tell you the truth.

i've worked at the Ewha/W in Mokdong for nearly 3 years. the first year and a half were great. then they got sued, changed their name..and pension stopped...pay was late....it was NOT good. I'm still owed $2000 in pension from the old W.

they sold off a lot of branches earlier this year, and the people who bought this W in Mokdong are worse than the old W. No pension, no medical insurance, late pay always...etc..etc...was bloody awful. so, i gave my notice and quit, and tomorrow is my last day as a "W employee!" Gawd, it'll be good to see the last of this school.

I'd, um, say DON'T work for a W school.

yea, maybe some branches are still going okay.

you can't always trust people, tho, with the email thing. my bosses actually gave my email out as a reference, even after i'd QUIT (given notice, but still working there), and i was completely honest with the potential new employee, and they decided not to come here.

the next time, they gave my co-worker's email to the next potential employee. he's just arrived here, and doesn't know much about them..knows the history of problems, at this particular branch, 'cause we've told him, but he doesn't care much. he's said he's come here to do a runner, and will leave soon, anyway. so, he wrote back to this person and said..'yea, seems alright here, far as i can tell.'...and think that person is coming to replace me now. poor bugger.

I currently work at one of the franchises.

It started quite well. I had 32 classes of 40 minutes duration, per week. I got National Medical Insurance.

After three months, things started to change (new Director of Studies).

My Insurance was cancelled. It was five months before I was informed. The boss said, "The National Insurance people have changed their policy towards foreigners, and aren't offering insurance cover anymore".

I believe this is a lie.

I now teach 40 classes per week. Eight classes without a tea break, in addition to one hour of prep. The other foreign teacher did a runner in July, but a new teacher didn't arrive until September, as could be expected. So, the summer schedule was tiring. I taught 50 classes per week. We had two days vacation in August, but I didn't get paid for it, although in my contract it says '7 days paid vacation, excluding national holidays'. Due to 'magical' calculations, I ended up with only 1,964,000 won for physically working 202 lessons. Bare in mind that only income tax was deducted.

Cameras in the classroom. All the teachers continually get feed back, about what to do, and what not to do. This makes me laugh, as I've been teaching for six years, and the owner hardly speaks any English. What's his point?

As I say, the beginning was fine, but things have changed for the worse. Not long till severance pay time Wink

As with all franchises, if the boss is cool, things could well be fine. If not, well................

That is the bugbear of Korea. You can do all your research but a month after you start, new management or a new owner comes in, and his word is law and it all changes over night.
