Death knell for the kilt

The kilt is dying.
Not in fashion magazines where tartans for fall are here, there and everywhere. The death is occurring at local Catholic schools where kilts are slowly disappearing from school uniforms.
For the first time, Grade 9 students at Michael Power/St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School in Etobicoke are not allowed to wear kilts. Walking shorts have been offered instead.
"What motivated the change was, I believe, enforcing a decent length worn by our female students was becoming rather onerous," says principal Rory McGuckin.
"We would field calls from people parents and former Power graduates complaining that the length of the girl's kilt was, in their opinion, unacceptable."
The school understands replacing uniforms is expensive. Kilts are about $79.95. So after consulting with parents, staff and the student council, it decided to phase out kilts.
Returning students can wear them. New students can't.
It's a similar situation at John Cabot Catholic Secondary School in Mississauga. "Our primary issue is one of the kilts not being worn properly," says Bruce Campbell, spokesperson for the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.
Board policy dictates kilts be a maximum of 15 centimetres above the middle of the knee. But "in many cases they're being modified well beyond the prescribed length."
John Cabot and five other Dufferin-Peel high schools are gradually eliminating kilts from their uniforms.
Karen Henderson isn't shocked by the news. The director of sales and marketing for uniform manufacturer R.J. McCarthy is familiar with the schools' concerns.
The Toronto-based company introduced a new kilt design three years ago that incorporates a pair of shorts that some schools have opted for.
Students can't roll the kilts up "because of the shorts inside. It also makes it difficult to alter them," Henderson says.
It's not just kilts that can cause conflict between students and staff. Some male students wear golf shirts longer than their schools allow. As a result, some schools specify golf shirts must be the McCarthy version that gathers at the end rather than hangs, she says.
Students have always tried to push the envelope a bit. But lately "we're noticing ... that they're trying to push everything a little bit further," Henderson says. "With a uniform they're told they have to wear it and they don't like being told what they have to do."
Hence, the teeny tiny kilts. |
Why do they have to phase them out? Seriously, how hard is it to say, that is too short, go home and change (or have pants ready for them). My god, kids are taking over, seriously. Adults are afraid to tell kids, "no" nowadays. There is no need to phase them out. Just say they have to be so and so length and enforce it. |

Man, about friggen time. I mean the school girl uniform has been a fetish for decades. Didn't the catholic school system ever figure out they're sending their girls out into the world dressed like ever slobbering pervo's delight?
Paul Bernardo didn't chase down public school girls. |

I don't think Scotland has anything to worry about. According to the article, the only place that has a stunting of kilt-wearing is Canada. Scotland is not mentioned at all. I don't think what is happening in Canada will have any real effect in the civilised world. |
