My apologises if this topic has been addressed earlier...
If there are any qualified or even amateur sociologists out there who can speak to this topic, or anyone in particular, please do. It seems as though all the big name women stars of movies and television have the who re vibe going. Let's see: Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Christina Aguillera, Beyonce (dresses like one), etc. Now, this is definitely a 90s, probably late 90s and 00s phenomena. I blame it on the Internet and all that porn, and maybe Sex and the City. Anyway, it appears that women, if given more power than ever before in history, have chosen in increasing numbers, to play the wh ore card. I'm interested in hearing the ladies on this forum's take on women of the new millenium. I'm old enough to remember when men were blamed for the subjucation of women, for making women into "sex-objects". Now, it seems like women, when given the reins, have done a better job of doing this to themselves than men ever did. Of course, don't think Oprah has tackled this topic yet, but sure it's right around the corner
Seriously though, ladies and sociologists, what's going on?

Or this?
I think they're just "finding their sexual identity" and "rebelling against male chauvinist standards" or "using the power of their sexuality" or "trying to look like sluts" |

yeah, women sure have the reins now. A whopping 15% of congress and 76 cents on the dollar! by god, they're living in a female utopia! and they've clearly CHOSEN to be regarded as sex objects! well, shucks, now I don't feel so bad! |

you must be from England. In Canada, women have men by the nutsacks. Don't be fooled by congressional states and how much they make. That is totally misleading. How many women want to be politicians? How many are willing to sacrifice being mothers to go at the workplace with the same intensity of many men? It's a silly argument. But, look at courts, marriages, and compare it to Korea, and you will see pre-feminism and the apex of feminism, the West. Women hold the reins where it counts. |

I make references to congress, cents, and dollars. Yes, I'm clearly from England. Otherwise, how could I be so droll?
I admit, I was being silly to consider such trifles as political and economic power in my assessment of women's status in the west. Clearly divorce settlements are the indicator we should be looking at.
Still, I can't quite summon my powers of imagination to convince myself that the salacious product of coporate media conglomerates represents the collective will of an entire gender. |

A variety of factors, I guess. We could say that it's just a media fashion-- since the Madonna 80s years it's become fashionable to show more and more skin, and to shock you need to keep pushing the line. Or we could go deeper and say that it's a sign of the coarsening and materialism of modern culture. Imagine a porn star as a celebrity and a role model even thirty years ago. It may result in a backlash in popular culture as people tire of the 'ho look, or it may continue as a strengthening tendency to see everyone as a sexual commodity. In the last few years it has extended to men as well, who are now judged on looks alone in popular culture, and it will likely get worse. I'm not sure it is the result of feminism, and at most it is a sort of perversion of 'empowerment' into an advertising strategy; how empowering is straining to look like a prostitute? I may be wrong.
Canada does have generally a pro-woman bias in legislation, even if this is necessary because the reality of the country is still biased towards men. In other words, maybe we have all these laws and regulations strongly favoring women in employment, university, and divorce because they're needed to redress real inequalities. This doesn't make this raft of laws fair in itself, and we can argue how many of them are driven by ideology.
Nevertheless, Jessica Alba is hot.

What do we need mods for? So far everyone's disagreeing politely.
That will change soon I'm sure.
I agree that the whole walk around half naked and screw whenever/whoever the urge takes us is bad.
I also agree that it is overstereo typed in the media.
I would further point out that while it is no longer strictly the case, sex still sells and men still buy a lot (remembering bbr's economics statement.)
Either way though, I would say it is an unhealthy trend for young women to be having fed to them by pop culture, much like barbie dolls and such. Not only is there no need to be unhealthly skinny, and to have your breasts augmented, it is also not necessary to act like a *beep*, or a high-school boy, or an adult man who lets his balls dictate his life like a high-school boy.
I also think this aspect of our pop-culture is bad for young men. |
