So this new guy came into my officetel today. He just got off the plane and I got to chat with him for a few minutes while he was moving in. Basically the conversation was like:

"I'm going to privately tutor outside of school." I asked him what visa and he said E-2. I told him he had better get permission. His reply was "Oh, I'll get permission alright. If I don't get it then my school is gonna regret it. If I don't get what I want then I'm just gonna take off. Also, my school better get everything hooked up for me within 2 days. I want my bank account, cell phone, internet, etc..."

I tried to explain to him that without his ARC, he's gonna have to rough it for a week or 2. He shrugged off my advice and was like, "No, I'm going to get what I want. During the phone interview they lied to me so I can use that against them."

All I could do was shake my head. New guy, fresh off the plane, hasn't started teaching yet and he's already thinking about running if he doesn't get everything he wants.

You should have simply welcomed him to Korea and said "don't let the door hit you on the a$$ on the way out!" Some people just don't get it (I'm talking about the newbie BTW).

And I'm sure the guy was an avid Dave's reader too.

I don't believe that media violence causes real life violence, but I do believe that internet jackassery on Dave's can lead to real life douchebags becoming even worse. Lame-brained newbies get that f you, pay me, I'll do whatever I want attitude from many of the posters here (Yingwenlaoshi and Wylies99 come to mind).

It's supposed to be fun coming here, not something to fight. Fight if you have to, not cause you want to.

This guy probably never stepped foot outside of his hometown until he got on that plane to Korea.

He's one of these types: Sbomeone he knows at school talked about a trip to Korea and how they made 40,000-60,000 won/hour tutoring privately. He heard stories of the amount of money that could be made, the bars, the women, etc...

I guess he came here thinking he could live the grand lifestyle. Just spit out English for a few hours a day and rake in the cash, go drinking/parting, and after year go back to his home country.

I'm gonna give this guy the benefit of the doubt for a week or 2. It could just be the 20 hour plane ride here. However, I can't ignore the fact that he said he wouldn't think twice about running if he didn't get his way here.

The timing's about right for him to be "confuzed."

Better say goodbye now because he won't last to the end of the week.

Why would the school have not pre-arranged internet access, a cell phone, and other basic things for their new teacher. They would have had plenty of time to set that stuff up as they knew exactly when the guy will be arriving.

The guy probably wants to call home or email home and tell everyone he is OK.

I resent that!

Then again, I'm probably desensitized somewhat from spending time on here Smile I'm definitely not going to be a runner.

My building is a brand new officetel. Half the telecom services aren't even available here because there's no line close enough. We can't get LG Xspeed, Hanaro, or even DreamCity cable. The only thing we have is Megapass, and KTF has to run it straight through a telephone pole, drill a hole through the wall to run the line. There's no internal wiring for any of that stuff.

Also, the guy just got off the plane and he hadn't signed the contract yet. he was suppose to go to school today and throw his weight around to get everything he wants before signing the contract. I don't think any school would set everything up for someone who hasn't signed the dotted line yet.

I'm interested to hear what stories (or complaints) he has when he gets back from the school later. I'll post an update if its anything worth tpying about.

It's called a PC-bang.

He could easily survive the week or whatever till he gets his ARC. If he wants internet/phone etc. set up in HIS name, he needs that card. Without, he's SOL.

Patience is a virtue.

Oh, let's see. They shouldn't do that for a number of reasons. Think about it. They have made the investment already and until that person shows up and expresses what luxaries he/she may want to have; why do they have an obligation to do any of that for them. A cell phone? Figure that out for yourself. Your school has no obligation to set you up with one. I could go on and rant about all of this, but it is pointless to do so. I agree that this is probably someone that has heard second hand on what you should expect or demand while here. These people need to get their heads out of their a$$es.

Anyway, let's see what happens with this. Korea has a way with breaking these types of people down and sending them home with their tails between their legs.

I spoke to the guy again today. I tried to give him some helpful advice like what to do if you get lost and tell him whats close by around here.

He brushed be off and was like "I just need to know the address here so I can send to my Korean friend in Seoul."

I told him our officetel was brand new and that its probably not on any maps yet. Not even delivery drivers around the corner know the name of the place. I told him to use the nearby city hall and education office as landmarks to find the place.

The guy brushed off my advice and had an attitude like he knows everything there is to know about Korea already. Thats the last time I offer this guy any help.

Is this really that far off of reality? A lot of people do exactly that and have a great time doing it. Nothing wrong with it in my opinion. I drink, party, rake in the cash...not going home though.
