I appreciate everyones help in responding to my last post on the National Health Plan. I did get it settled and she said she would get me registered sometime in the next week. My question now is that I discovered my boss isn't paying into the the pension scheme or paying my taxes to the government. If I want to report her what will happen. Will I be out of a job or will both the pension and tax office just come in and make her start paying taxes. I have little experience with this matter. I understand though that she will be fined which is all and dandy with me but I don't want to loose my job. So far my boss has been nice and I actually like my job for the most part. I think the problem lays in the fact that she and her husband just don't know what they are doing. When I have asked for their help they have been more than willing to give it to me. That fact of the matter is though is that I don't want to loose out on my pension which is to be refunded to me. What would be the best way to get this situation taken care of. I would appreciate any and all help.

Tell them you are aware that they are not paying pension or taxes and say that leaves one of 3 avenues...

1) Ask for your whole salary to be paid to you every month, as the supposed taxes and pension are going into your boss' pocket.

2) If he laughs and says no then tell him you are going down to the tax office to report him.....the tax office in Korea doesn't like people and businesses not paying their taxes so if you file a report saying you are legally employed and are paying taxes but he isn't paying them he will get into a load of trouble. However be prepared to back-up this and for all the crap that could potentially come afterwards....

3) Just roll with it, do your time here and if they are treating you well then don't worry...


the first hagwon i worked at here the boss wasn't paying anything. So a couple of the teachers went down and reported him at the tax office. Never seen such a brew-ha-ha in my life. Massive screaming match with the tax official coming up and him and the director and the teachers getting into a huge yelling match.
He ended up having to pay taxes for 8 foreigners for a year plus a fine and the teacjhers got all their tax money back that they claimed....

OP- no one in Korea is THAT DUMB. If they are saving/making money, then they know exactly what they are doing.

I agree with wylies99. If they say they don't know they are lying to your face. When I found out I'd been illegally registered as a part-time worker my manager claimed the government must have made the mistake.

If you like your job and they are going to fight you over it just let it slide, but in no way agree to it. In a few months or sometime down the road if things aren't going so well, make an issue out of it and fight them.

That's what I did. Excellent references and a lot of extra overtime and what not by playing nice.

My first hogwan job the director told me upfront that he wouldn't deduct/pay into the pension fund so I could get more take-home pay. He did deduct the taxes though. He somehow used his own health insurance, I think, the couple times I had to see a doctor.

I'm not sure if it's still the case, but at the time (four years ago...) businesses with fewer than five-or-six employees were exempt from having to pay into the pension and/or health insurance...

One thing that isn't clear, is your boss deducting money from you for the pension and taxes. If she is, then I'd say give her a chance to correct it and then if she doesn't report her.

I reread your post, but whether or not your boss was deducting money wasn't totally clear to me.
