Personally I think anyone who gets involved in a flame war without being willing to post their real name and location first is a coward. |
I respectfully disagree. There's almost no way to truly verify that someone is posting their real name and location with actually knowing that person in the flesh. I believe your real name is William Beckerson, but I have no 'proof', it's just an article of faith that you're the real McCoy. Furthermore, someone could post their real name and location and still make up outrageous lies about everything else. Flames, as with other posts, have to stand or fall on their own merits. Someone finds something specious about another's posts- well fine, let that person reply.
In my opinion, the BIG problem is most people are unwilling to admit that they're in error, that they made a silly mistake, that their memory isn't as good as it should be, that they fudged a bit on details, etc. Sometimes, you just have to say 'oops, my bad' and let things drop rather than try to defend an undefendable post. |

unfortunately it isn't only on these types of message boards that people aren't willing to admit they're wrong or made some mistake. Good ol' human nature, happens with all social interactions.
As for the flames, usually it is their aggressive way to say, "I f'd up and have nothing else to back up my argument so I'll insult you." At least that's what I think. Either that or it is caused by arrogance and blind faith in the argument you just made in your posting.

Actually I don't think it's just message boards in general people (esp. in political arguements) will name call, which I'm willing to wager a beer at the next get together this thread will turn into.

Yup, I'm an arrogant s.o.b, that's for sure. Everyone's got something they need to work on, and that would one [of many] for me. |

Ummmm- isn't that BIG problem why people who can't stand on their own two legs intellectually take up more than one name or even up to an uncountable plethora of names?

Ummmm- isn't this what people who can't stand-up well with only one posting name count on? WB mentioned this unique point too in a similar strain of thinking.
How can having posters with enumerous names not eventually render portions and the intentions of this board pointless? It's a shame really spoiling another man's vision for your own. I guess some bums think that's ok. I don't.

I agree. So why are you claiming that I was one of your "sock puppets," as you did on another thread?
It's ultimately more shameful to take credit for another man's vision when you think he isn't looking. I guess some bums think that's ok. I don't. |

Your version of Mr. TESL lacks heart. My version of Mr. TESL was on the old board far before you were a thought in your mind. Anyway- I see you're making good use of it. Back to the original post-----
Real Names and Flaming: I'm not for real names on any board. However, I'm not for using multiple names either as it tends to tell me (and I'm the one I have to live with most of the time) that I think I can't stand on one posting name. I'd like to see how long posters with more than one name would be able to stand in the arena apart from hiding behind several names. I wonder if they'd make it even 2 rounds before they felt- alone. |

That's all very well and good, HP, but let me ask you this- who were you before June 9th, the day you joined this board? It wasn't Mr. TESL... |

|

I'll be frank here- I didn't like the new board when it started up- so- I didn't sign-up until then. I had grown fond of the old board with the way threads were so easy to follow. Not to mention that- I don't spend every dying month here. I come for a time to see if any new laws, events, or whatever exists- when I'm sure it's ticking the same as always- I leave.
As I hinted- I often wonder why a poster would even think about having more than one name/ID. I suspect that if people would keep their one and only ID there would be a lot less flaming, a lot less crap, and a lot more substance to posts. Perhaps- posters minimizing down to one ID would make Dave's an even greater pleasure- I guess that requires a certain amount of character. Right- Bs-jo? |

Theres only one rapier. I think its pathetic some of you cowards have multiple aliases, posing as a cute angel of light with one, and a flame- throwing jackass with the other. With me, its all roled into one,- a complete, whole person!!
Besides, the modes haven't approved my applications for different ID's. |

It actually doesn't happen all that often. Discussions about people with multiple nicknames are actually a lot more common. |

It would never have occured to me that this kind of thing (multiple aliases) happens at all!
I already avoid chatsites because of the amount of people that confuse their internet existences with reality and whose whole social spectrum and feelings of self importance stem from their ability to manipulate their representations of themselves from behind their keyboards.
of course, sometimes it's just fun to vent and not have to deal with any consequences... and i guess sometimes it's fun to pretend to vent and then watch the consequences
blurgh, i could go on. |
